Global union federation the ITF and international ship managers' association InterManager signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that encourages them to work together on areas such as maritime safety, training, and preventing the criminalization of seafarers. The understanding was signed by InterManager Secretary General Guy Morel and ITF Seafarers' Section Secretary Jon Whitlow. The MOU identifies a significant overlap in the goals and objectives of the two organizations in the field of shipping's human element. InterManager, the international trade association for in‐house and third party ship managers, has appointed Roberto Giorgi as its new President with immediate effect. Mr Giorgi, who was elected unopposed at the Nov. 17 InterManager AGM in Singapore, succeeds Ole Stene, Managing Director of Aboitiz Jebsen Bulk Transport Corporation, who has completed his two‐year appointment in the role. The appointment of Mr Giorgi is a significant and positive move in the growth of InterManager.

Providers in the communications and IT in shipping sector have been short-listed for innovation honors in the CITIS 2002 Awards. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner during the sixth CITIS event -hosted and sponsored by Inmarsat in London from March 18-22 - which also features a conference, seminars and an exhibition. The dinner will take place on March 19 at the Underglobe in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. In addition to awards in four commercial categories, International Maritime Organization secretary general William O’Neil is to receive a lifetime achievement award for steering the introduction of the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System.

Communications and IT companies in shipping were toasted at the CITIS 2002 Awards in London in March with top honors going to a daily electronic newspaper, an evacuation simulator, a collision avoidance trainer and a message management concept. In addition to innovation awards in four categories, International Maritime Organization secretary general William O’Neil received a lifetime achievement award for overseeing the introduction of the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System. The winners, selected by expert judges from a shortlist of three in each category, were announced at a gala dinner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre during the sixth CITIS event, organized by Lloyd’s List Events.

EUROPE should look to institute laws that reward those choosing the sea as a career instead of singling out seafarers as scapegoats in pollution initiatives, the President of the International Ship Managers’ Association (ISMA) has warned. Invited to Brussels earlier this week [Tuesday April 5th] to address a high level delegation from the Directorate General for Energy and Transport which included Fotis Karamitsos, Director for Maritime Transport and Jacques Michaux, Deputy Head, Rajaish Bajpaee said that in the face of shortages of quality seafarers, the responsibilities of a seafaring profession can best be met by induction of the best youth into seafaring from grass root levels.

Self-Regulation of the global ship management sector has taken a step nearer reality following the announcement that a method has been developed to set an industry-wide standard for operational key performance indicators (KPI) governing the management of today’s ships. A pilot project initiated by a Sponsor Group made up of the International Ship Managers’ Association (ISMA) together with 18 of the world’s leading ship managers and owners has identified a methodology to establish common standards for measuring, calculating and reporting KPIs to the industry. The move is significant in that it is the first time since the establishment of ISMA in the late 1980s that the global ship management industry has come together to agree how to self-regulate.
