The Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the appointment of 10 Board Members to the Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Donald Winter. “The establishment of the Advisory Board is an important milestone in the Government’s naval shipbuilding strategy, ensuring expert, independent advice to Government on all aspects of this historical national endeavour,” Minister Pyne said. ABS Elects New Council and Committee Members

Shipbuilding Apprentices Move Up, Start Work at Ingalls
Nearly 300 new Ingalls Shipbuilding employees receive a right royal welcome into the workforce. The new employees were welcomed by Governor Phil Bryant, Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin Edenzon and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College President Mary Graham during an apprentice graduation ceremony at the Biloxi Civic Center. The 295 graduates trained at Ingalls' Pascagoula, Gulfport and Avondale facilities as well as at area community colleges. "You've overcome challenges, met your commitments, and persevered," Edenzon said. Edenzon said the graduates are laying the groundwork to build not only Ingalls' future -- Pascagoula needs up to 2,000 new workers for the shipyard in the next 12 months -- but their own.
SCA, Ingalls Presidents to Speak at GSSC Conference
Presidents of Shipbuilders Council of America and Ingalls Shipbuilding to speak at GSSC's fifth annual Conference. Matt Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America will present a national perspective of the shipbuilding industry at GSSC’s fifth annual conference, March 27-28, 2012. Irwin Edenzon, president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, will focus on workforce development in light of a changing economy. A tour of the AIDT Maritime Training Center, Vendor Expo, networking reception, and Interesting and timely breakout sessions addressing environmental issues currently impacting the industry and welding processes to improve worker productivity complete the agenda for the two-day event. Three Exec Appointments at Newport News
Northrop Grumman Corporation announces the following three executive appointments in its Newport News sector: Becky Stewart, currently vice president, Surface Ship and Submarine Fleet Maintenance Program has been named head of the Submarine Program; Irwin F. Edenzon, currently vice president, Business and Technology Development, has been named vice president, Technology Development and Fleet Support; and John J. promoted to vice president, Business Development. Newport News Wins $3.8B Carrier Contract
Newport News Shipbuilding Inc. won a $3.8 billion U.S. Navy contract to design and construct the 10th and last Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier, CVN 77. The unnamed carrier is scheduled for delivery in 2008 and will serve as the first transition ship to a new class of carriers, Newport News said. The company will also be responsible for delivering the ship's warfare systems, which was a task previously performed by the Navy. That includes development and procurement of the warfare system through a subcontract to Lockheed Martin Corp. and overall integration of the system into the ship. The carrier's warfare system will incorporate a new multi-function radar system and an information network that allows new technology to be inserted in a cost-effective way, the company said.
