Virginia-Class Boats Sailing Into Action

USS Virginia (SSN 774), USS Texas (SSN 775), USS North Carolina (SSN 777) and Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) (SSN 778) are all currently conducting exercises and tests off the Atlantic coast. USS Hawaii (SSN 776), the first Virginia-class boat to deploy, is currently at General Dynamics Electric Boat conducting a post-shakedown availability, an industrial activity availability assigned to correct deficiencies found during the shakedown cruise or to accomplish other authorized improvements.

USS Alexandria Receives MUC Award

The crew of USS Alexandria (SSN 757) received the meritorious unit commendation award, Nov. 26, for their 2006 deployment with the Enterprise Strike Group to the 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operation. Alexandria, a Los Angeles-class nuclear powered submarine, was recognized for its achievements during its deployment from May to November 2006 in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations. According to Cmdr. Mike Bernacchi, Alexandria's commanding officer, the multi-mission capabilities of the Navy's modern submarines have been clearly demonstrated by Alexandria over the past few years.
Navy to Drop Anchor in Tucson
The Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) and Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Phoenix are partnering to celebrate Tucson Navy Week, from March 14 through March 20. Tucson Navy Week is a week-long series of awareness events held in conjunction with Major League Baseball Spring Training and Aerospace & Arizona Days. Participating Navy assets include: the Blue Angels; a namesake visit by crew members of USS Tucson (SSN 770); F/A-18 flight simulator; Navy dive tank and Navy Band Southwest. Vice Adm. Evan Chanik, U.S. 2nd Fleet Commander, will also be participating at events during the week. “We’re extremely excited and proud of the Navy assets that will be visiting Tucson and surrounding communities,” said Cmdr. Pamela Holland, commanding officer, NRD Phoenix.
