The first ships to be classed with Lloyd’s Register’s cyber notations have been delivered to Global United in Korea. Built by Hanjin Heavy Industries, in collaboration with Alpha Ori Technology, the ships have been awarded the notation Cyber (AL-SAFE) certifying the autonomous systems onboard as safe. This is the first real example of the digital transformation in shipping – the ships will operate in an autonomous mode for selected functions using cutting edge digital technology. The new cyber-enabled features allow crew to operate ships more efficiently. This is also the first example of a ship certified to stream data into a big data platform.

The formation of a chapter of The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) last week in Kolkata comes as a major break-through. Though CMMI was formed in India in 1956, with its Head office at Mumbai, it was able to establish in 12 chapters at various cities in India such as Chandigarh, New Delhi, Dehradun, Patna, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Goa, Mangalore, Bangalore and Kochi. But all effots in establishing a chapter in Kolkata failed for the last sixty years of its existence despite various determined efforts made on several times. According to their spokesman, the difficulty was because a local Kolkata Association of Master Mariners was in existence.

IRClass, the Leading Ship Classification Society has hired 17 of the brightest and best Naval Architecture students from the elite technical institutes of India. IRClass celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. In keeping with the philosophy of acquiring the brightest talent, IRClass has visited four technical institutes of India namely, IIT-Chennai, IIT-Kharagpur, Indian Maritime Institute-Vizag and CUSAT-Kochin for campus placements to induct best talent from the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The management has constituted a four member senior management team to visit and select trainees from these Institutes. After gruelling selection process, 17 students including batch toppers were selected and invited to join the prestigious Trainee Scheme of the organisation.

Some of the newest OSHA regulations impacting the shipyard industry deal with Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). When this set of standards was first published, many questioned the need for them - after all, how complicated are hardhats, safety glasses or steel-toe boots? At first glance, a PPE program does not seem very complex or difficult to implement; however, I have found this is a consistently deficient area in the safety audits I have performed. When I visit workplaces, I often find inappropriate PPE is being used or PPE is not being used at all. The identification of the appropriate PPE associated with a particular task or job classification is the first step in an effective PPE program.

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has announced the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Japanese Hydrographic Association (JHA) that will enable them to provide Admiralty customers with over 600 new ENCs of Japanese waters and the Malacca Strait. This agreement comes on the back of a number of other significant successes for the UKHO, who in addition to signing with Japan, have recently secured distribution arrangements with several other nations in the Far East. Together, these deals will provide extensive ENC coverage of Far Eastern waters and bring the UKHO a major step closer to providing its customers with a single source for all their official Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) needs.

The Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS), operator of the Primar Stavanger electronic navigational chart (ENC) service, has signed a distribution agreement for Japanese ENCs with the Japan Hydrographic Association (JHA). Japan has full coverage of ENCs in usage bands from harbor to general. In addition, oceans around the country are covered with ENCs in overview scales. In total close to 600 ENCs, the Japanese coverage spans from Indonesia in the south to the Kamchatka Peninsula in the north, North Korea in the west and the Pacific as far as Hawaii in the east. The Pacific ENCs meet seamlessly with the American NOAA ENCs, also available from Primar Stavanger.In addition, Primar Stavanger will be able to distribute ENCs of the Malacca and Singapore Straits under this agreement.
