Today’s ATB play seemingly has legs for the long haul, as operators build and market needs fluctuate. The refined product trades are always in flux. Similarly, the supply patterns for products (and for chemicals derived from oil refining) are subject to constant change. At the same time, the distribution of refined petroleum products sees great benefit from the efficiency of Articulated Tug Barges (ATBs), which have the flexibility to adjust to dynamic supply programs between refineries and myriad distribution facilities dotting the coastline. It wasn’t always like that.

Crowley Maritime Corp. informs its liner services group will add sailings between Pennsauken, N.J., and San Juan, Puerto Rico, this summer. The company has served the Puerto Rico market since 1954. “With our accelerated sailing schedule, we have determined that we can add a sailing each month between Pennsauken and San Juan,” said John Hourihan, Crowley senior vice president and general manager, Puerto Rico services. “We’ve been working diligently since last December to add capacity and tweak our vessel rotations and operations to accommodate as much cargo as possible. Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. announced today that it has executed a $48.5 million construction contract for a new pier at its Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, further solidifying its commitment to the region, the company announced today. In conjunction with the investment, the company and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) have also concluded a 30-year lease extension for the Isla Grande property. The maiden voyage of Crowley Liner Services’ new flat-deck barge will end on Monday when the barge is scheduled to arrive in San Juan with a full 400-load delivery. The vessel’s deployment is a major part of Crowley’s rapid response to the sudden departure of Horizon Lines from the Puerto Rico trade. Since mid December, Crowley has, through a number of service enhancements, created additional weekly cargo carrying capacity for about 780 loads – or 78 percent the 1,000 loads previously transported by Horizon Lines in an average week.

JAXPORT’s Board of Directors today unanimously approved an expanded, long-term lease with Crowley Liner Services Inc. Under the agreement, Crowley will relocate its Puerto Rican service from its private terminal along Jacksonville’s harbor to JAXPORT’s Talleyrand Marine Terminal and expand its current leasehold in preparation for deployment of the company’s two new LNG-powered Commitment-Class ships. Crowley Liner Services Inc. is a subsidiary of the 123-year-old Crowley Maritime Corporation, a privately held family and employee-owned company headquartered in Jacksonville since 1975.

Brings Company Investment in New Equipment for 2011 to more than $23 Million. Crowley Maritime Corporation's liner services group is continuing to grow and update its equipment fleet to better serve customers with the addition of 500 new 40-foot, high-cube containers. The acquisition adds to the company's already robust equipment fleet of more than 45,000 units, as well as phases out some older containers. The new containers, which have a capacity of 2,700 cubic feet, will be used in all liner service operations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

Crowley Maritime Corporation, working under contract with the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), successfully discharged 12 20-foot containers of relief supplies across a beach in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Jan. 22 in an experimental lightering operation. The success of this operation, which involved lifting the containers from a Crowley container ship anchored in the harbor to a smaller, shallow-draft landing vessel for transport and discharge over the beach, paves the way for container shipments directly into Port-au-Prince next week.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that John Ara has been promoted to vice president with responsibility for the company's Atlantic/Gulf Coast commercial and marine operations business. general manager. Ara, who most recently held the position of director, marine operations, will now have commercial responsibility for contract services as well as Gulf Coast marine operations. Ara is a 30-year Crowley veteran who began his career working as a dispatcher in San Pedro, Calif. He has held positions of increasing responsibility and high visibility throughout his career with Crowley, including time spent in San Juan, Puerto Ricoas sales manager and in recent years he has had a large role in the company's Sakhalin Island and Angola sealift projects.

A bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on April 30 that encompasses the policy provisions of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2005 legislative package, including a proposal that would establish a new inspection program for the towing industry. The bill, entitled the Maritime Transportation Amendments of 2004 (H.R. 4251), was quickly slated for action. On May 6, the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), convened a hearing on the authorization measure. Blue & Gold Fleet, of San Francisco, has sold its 72 x 29 ft. all-aluminum, high-speed passenger catamaran ferry, Ohlone Spirit (ex-Alderbrook Express) to T.M.T. Corp., of Washington. The 212-passenger vessel was built in 1984 by Nichols Bros., of Freeland, Wash. to an INCAT design. It was powered by twin GM16V92Ts for a total of 1,600 hp producing a speed of 22 knots. Ohlone Spirit was most recently serving as a passenger ferry on San Francisco Bay, until its delivery. Intended service for the vessel will be as a tour/sightseeing vessel in Southeast Alaska. Also, Pacific Northwest Aggregates, Inc., has taken delivery of 250 x 76 x 16.7 ft. ocean deck barge St. John, from Crowley Marine Service. The 5,970 tdw barge was originally built in 1976 by Todd Shipyards, Inc.

Crowley will resume its liner cargo services to and from Gulfport, Miss., effective Saturday, Oct. 1. The service will commence with the northbound sailing of the RoRo Gothica, which will bring cargo from Central America including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. That vessel will make the turn - discharging import cargo and loading export cargo - the same day and sail to the northern zone of Central America. That ship will be followed by the Express on Oct. 4. Thereafter, Crowley will continue to provide service over Gulfport to and from Central America every Saturday and Tuesday until such time as the company can resume its full schedule of three, weekly, fixed-day sailings.
