German shipping line Hapag Lloyd is close to completing a merger with United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) after UASC's shareholders agreed terms to repay outstanding debts, sources familiar with the talks told Reuters. The deal to create the world's fifth-biggest shipping company, valued at about 7 billion to 8 billion euros ($7.8-$8.9 billion), had been scheduled to complete at the end of last year. It would give Hapag Lloyd access to bigger ships on the major Asia to Europe trade route.

King Abdullah Port (KAP), the first privately developed and managed port in the Saudi Kingdom and the region, has announced the port’s success in handling 1,307,017 TEUs, says a repot in the Saudi Gazette. Engineer Abdullah bin Muhammad Hameedaddin, managing director of the Ports Development Company, owners, developers and managers, of KAP, said that the company also opened its fourth berth in May 2015, increasing its capacity to over 2.7 million TEUs as per its Masterplan. Hameedaddin showcased KAP's most notable achievements during 2015 which is the port's second year of operation. He pointed out the significant role of the advanced capabilities available at KAP such as the 18-meter deep berths as well as the massive storage spaces and the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

The U.S. and Georgian maritime sectors rolled out new Joint Maritime Operations Center (JMOC), which was built at the Coast Guard Supsa Radar Station on the Black Sea coast, reports Azer News. JMOC was established under the Coast Guard Department of Georgia's Internal Ministry and equipped with joint management, control, communications and maritime surveillance systems. JMOC will improve the capability of the national agencies to secure Georgia’s maritime safety. The main task of the center is to prevent, detect and eliminate all kinds of illegal activities, maritime incidents and gross violations of maritime laws in Georgia’s maritime space that could pose a threat to the security of Georgia and the wider region.

Russian Ministry of Finance transferred the first tranche of 5 million euros for implementation of environmental projects of the Arctic Council. This amount is the first payment of Russia’s financial contribution with the total amount of 10 million euros to the Project Support Fund of the Arctic Council, established by the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO). The funds are to be transferred in two tranches of 5 million euros each in 2014 and 2015, respectively, reports RIA Novosti. The Fund will use them to eliminate hotbeds of pollution in the Arctic, as well as to reduce atmospheric emissions of harmful substances, including those directly affecting climate change.

Indian Ocean Islands, Seychelles & Mauritius join forces to manage exploitation of world's largest offshore continental shelf area. With the help of the Commonwealth Secretariat Seychelles and Mauritius have established a joint commission, the first of its kind, to manage an offshore zone comprising 400,000 sq. kilometers of continental shelf. This development comes after their successful joint claim to the continental shelf before the United Nations. This will enable both countries to jointly regulate seabed activities, including exploration for petroleum and minerals, as well as the conservation and management of the living resources of the seabed, reports 'The Information Daily'.

The board of directors of CNOOC Limited announced that Mr. Fu Chengyu, an Executive Director of the Company, will be re-designated as a Non-executive Director of the Company. Mr. Fu remains the Chairman of the Board. Mr. Li Fanrong, a Non-executive Director of the Company, will be re-designated as an Executive Director of the company. The re-designations of Mr. Fu and Mr. Li will become effective from 16 September 2010. Born in 1951, Mr. Fu received a B.S. degree in geology from the Northeast Petroleum Institute in China and a master degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Southern California in the United States. He has over 30 years of experience in the oil industry in the PRC. He previously worked in China’s Daqing, Liaohe and Huabei oil fields.

Alan Wilson and Paul Jennings became joint managing directors of the ‘A’ rated, 100 million GT North of England P&I club 18 September 2009 following the retirement of Rodney Eccleston after 21 years at the helm. Club chairman Albert Engelsman congratulated former deputies Wilson and Jennings on their appointments, which mirror the successful joint leadership role played by Eccleston and Peter Crichton for 18 years until Crichton’s retirement in 2006. Wilson joined North in 1981 after qualifying as a chartered accountant with Binder Hamlyn. He was appointed finance manager and company secretary in 1988 and subsequently became finance director of the club’s new wholly-owned management company, North Insurance Management Limited (NIML) in 2000.

Corbett & Holt, LLC and Gallagher Marine Systems, Inc. announced that they have reached agreement on a merger that will combine the two companies. This move is designed to join two of the premier providers of Qualified Individual and spill management team services and compliance support for the U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) and other U.S. state and national oil and hazardous substance pollution laws and regulations. The companies will continue to operate as Gallagher Marine Systems and Corbett & Holt under a joint management team. The joint management team will be made up of Biff Holt as managing director, Jack Gallagher as Director of response operations, and Charles Corbett as director of technical services.

Kvaerner announced that it has agreed with Aker RGI Holding to establish a jointly owned shipbuilding management company. Together, the two groups own 12 shipyards in Europe, and one in the USA and Brazil. These yards have a total of some 13,500 employees with combined revenues of $2.2 billion. Kvaerner and RGI have on a number of previous occasions stated the intention to merge their respective shipbuilding operations in the future. The parties have, however, agreed to postpone such negotiations until a better assessment of the financial and operational issues have been concluded, and until such time as the value of the operations can be more precisely determined. that the value of their respective operations will increase through the establishment of a joint management company.

Dr. William Anderson, director of the Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL), today announced the appointment of State Archaeologist John R. Halsey to the Joint Management Committee administering the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Preserve off the coast of Alpena. Halsey, who represents Michigan on the federal-state committee, will serve a two-year term expiring Jan. 1, 2005. The other member of the Joint Management Committee is Daniel J. Basta, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Sanctuary Program. A Chinese consortium led by China Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) and oil major BP aim to complete a feasibility study for China's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) project by next June. An agreement for the supply of gas is also expected to be sealed in a similar timeframe, the official said. The Chinese consortium and BP plan to build a three million ton per year (tpy) LNG import terminal in southern Chinese province of Guangdong by the end of 2005. "We aim to finish the study around May or June next year. It is hoped that the gas supply contract will also fall into place around the same schedule," he said. The Guangdong LNG Joint Executive Office, a joint management team based in the city of Shekou, is preparing bidding documents for potential gas suppliers, the Shekou-based official said.
