CSA Honors 80 Foss Vessels for Environmental Excellence
The Arthur Foss, the Justine Foss and many other Foss Maritime vessels have been free of environmental mishaps for the past 20 years. In fact, 80 tugs and barges owned by the Seattle-based company, which has one of the nation's largest coastal tug and barge fleet, are being recognized this year by a major maritime organization for their outstanding environmental safety records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the awards honoring Foss' environmental achievements earlier this month in the nation's capital.

U.S. Coast Guard Accepts Nine BWTS as AMS
Followers of the Ballast Water Treatement System (BWTS) situation (ie. presumably anyone reading this publication) were heartened last month when the U.S Coast Guard announced its acceptance of nine BWTS as Alternate Management Systems (AMS), helping to finally bring some clarity to ship owners, yards and suppliers. On April 15, 2013, the USCG announced the acceptance of the ballast water treatment systems as AMS in compliance with the service’s March 2012 final rule for Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged (SLOSBWD) in U.S. waters.

By the Numbers: Subchapter M Statistics
The Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2004 (Aug. 9, 2004), established new authorities for towing vessels. Out of that came a proposed regulatory scheme requiring towing vessels to become inspected vessels and obtain a Certificate of Inspection (COI). The proposed Subchapter M for title 46, U.S.C., covering Certification, Vessel Compliance, Towing Safety Management System (TSMS), Third-Party Organizations, Operations, Life-Saving, Fire Protection, Machinery and Electrical Systems and Equipment, and Construction and Management of towing vessels is now in draft form. USCG Accepts BWTS as Alternate Management Systems
The U.S. Coast Guard announced the acceptance of nine ballast water treatment systems today as Alternate Management Systems (AMS) in compliance with the service’s March 2012 final rule for Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged (SLOSBWD) in U.S. waters. PVA & Coast Guard In Hi-speed Vessel Fire Safety Accord
The Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) & the U.S. Coast Guard sign policy agreement regarding Coast Guard approval of fire protection for newly constructed high-speed vessels. This agreement is critical to the U.S. shipbuilding industry to ensure delivery of Coast Guard-approved high-speed passenger vessels. The product of a chartered working group of experienced PVA member industry experts and Coast Guard policy specialists, the agreement details guidelines for pre-approved design criteria including seating arrangements and space dimensions.
ClassNK Receives Expanded Authorization from U.S. Coast Guard
The world’s largest classification society ClassNK announced that it was granted expanded authorization from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) on 25 December 2012, and will now be able to carry out a full range of surveys for the SOLAS, MARPOL and AFS conventions, as well as ISM Audits on behalf of the United States flag administration. Vessels Have Gone Two Years or Longer Without Environmental Incidents, Winning Chamber of Shipping Honor. Sixty-one tugs and tank barges owned by Foss Maritime Company have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental safety records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the awards honoring the Seattle, WA-based Foss' environmental achievements on November 13, 2012 in Washington, D.C. Altogether, the 61 Foss vessels recognized by CSA have gone a combined 543 years without an environmental incident.
