Canada, Australia to Monitor North Korean Ships

Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Saturday the country will send a military patrol aircraft to monitor North Korean vessels suspected of transferring prohibited goods in defiance of United Nations sanctions.Canada also plans to deploy patrol aircraft for such activities, and surveillance planes from both countries will be based in the U.S. military’s Kadena air base on Japan’s southern island of Okinawa, the Japanese government said in a separate statement.The…

USCG & Mariners Rescue 3 in Eastern Pacific

The Coast Guard and commercial mariners rescued three people who were reported overdue on a skiff near the Chuuk Atoll, Thursday. The motor vessel, Nord Venus located the three male survivors approximately 23 miles north of Chuuk. An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu, is searching for the fourth crewman. A Navy P-8 airplane crew from the Kadena Air Base in Japan will join the search later today. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Guam received a call Tuesday, from the Chuuk search and rescue liaison requesting assistance in searching for an overdue 19-foot skiff with four men aboard missing since Sunday. The men departed Weno, Chuuk, and were en route Fananu Island, Hall Islands but never arrived at their destination.

One Dead as Typhoon Batters Okinawa

One man died, more than 500,000 people were urged to evacuate and hundreds of flights were cancelled in Japan as a strong typhoon brought torrential rain and high winds to its southwestern islands and could bring heavy rain to Tokyo later this week. Typhoon Neoguri weakened from its original status as a super typhoon but remained intense, with gusts of more than 250 km per hour (155 mph). It was powering through the Okinawa island chain where emergency rain and high-seas warnings were in effect. Super Typhoon Headed for Japan, Emergency Warnings Issued

Japan's weather agency on Monday issued emergency warnings to urge people in the country's southern islands to take maximum precautions as a super typhoon described as a "once in decades storm" is set to rake the Okinawa island chain with heavy rain and powerful winds. Typhoon Neoguri was already gusting at more than 250 km an hour (150 mph) and may pick up still more power as it moves northwest, growing into an "extremely intense" storm by Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. But it was not expected to be as strong as Typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands in the Philippines last year. The JMA issued emergency storm and high sea warnings for Japan's small southern island of Miyakojima, some 300 km (188 miles) southwest of Okinawa island, and for a smaller nearby islet.

Ten Rescued in Pacific Fishing Vessel Blaze

The Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System partners, coordinated in the rescue of 10 crewmembers forced to abandon ship due to a shipboard fire 700 miles west of Guam. Coast Guard Sector Guam watchstanders received an initial alert from an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon from the Hsin Man Chun, a 70-foot Taiwanese fishing vessel. Watchstanders then received a call from rescue coordination center Taipei, China reporting that a sister ship of the Hsin Man Chun received a radio call indicating the crew was planning to abandon ship. First CARAT Exercise Phase Concludes in Philippines
