SNA West Coast Symposium 2014
The Surface Navy Association will hold its annual West Coast Symposium at Naval Station San Diego on August 21. The event will be held on the waterfront at Pier 2. Deputy Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, U.S. Central Command Rear Adm. Jim Loeblein will describe the dynamic maritime operational picture in the U.S. Fifth Fleet area of responsibility. Closer to home, Vice Adm. Kenneth Floyd will share his views on the recently completed RIMPAC exercises around Hawaii and the west coast. Rear Adm. Jim Kilby, who recently took command of the newly established Naval Surface Warfare Development Center, will provide the Navy’s vision of tactics for the future. Capt. John Fuller, will provide an update on the littoral combat ship (LCS) mission modules.
Top Chinese Military Commander Visits America
Chief of the General Staff, People's Republic of China, Gen. Fang Fenghui is on a scheduled two-day visit to San Diego hosted by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet (C3F) Vice Adm. Kenneth Floyd. His visit is part of a week-long engagement hosted by Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey. During his visit to San Diego, Fang met with Adm. Samuel J. Locklear, commander, U.S. Pacific Command and received tours of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), the littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) and the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot. This counterpart visit is intended to help establish clear paths of communication, encourage transparency and trust, mitigate risks, and focus multilateral cooperative efforts to address common regional and global security challenges.
23 Nations to Participate in World's Largest Maritime Exercise
Twenty-three nations, 47 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise scheduled June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. U.S. Third Fleet Public Affairs informs that 47 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and altogether 25,000 personnel from 23 nations, will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise scheduled June 26 to Aug. 1, 2014 in and around the Hawaiian Islands. Two nations, Brunei and the People's Republic of China, will participate in RIMPAC for the first time in 2014. Also new at RIMPAC this year are two hospital ships, USNS Mercy and PLA (N) Peace Ark.
