India to Boost LNG Impots
India plans to more than double its liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal capacity in six years to cater to the rising natgas demand from refineries, fertilizer and power plants, according to a report in the Economic Times. A total of 15.15m tonnes of LNG was delivered into Indian terminals in 2015, a 5% increase from 2014, according to ICIS data. India was one of the biggest importers of LNG in Asia buying approximately10.4 million tonnes in 2014. In 2015-16, the natural gas consumption in the country rose barely 2 per cent to 52 billion cubic meters, of which 40 per cent was imported as LNG. With LNG prices hovering around a benign $5/mBtu for several months coupled with drop in domestic production of natural gas, India’s gas imports have risen a steep 45.4% annually in April.
Petronet achieves highest turnover at Rs 37,748 crores
Petronet LNG Ltd, the nation's biggest importer of gas, reported yesterday its highest turnover at Rs 37,748 crores for the year ended March 31, 2014 and net profit at Rs 712 crores. During the year the Dahej terminal processed 489 TBTUs depicting a capacity utilisation of 96%. Kochi terminal was commissioned during the year and processed only 4.50 TBTUs of LNG serving two consumers in the vicinity of the terminal – the BPCL refinery and FACT. natural gas demand in the Country. The turnover, however, registered an increase of 20% over the previous year – primarily on account of increase in the price of LNG and depreciation of Indian Rupee vs the US Dollar. Capitalisation of the terminal at Kochi has added significant costs on account of interest and depreciation.
New Kochi, India, LNG Terminal: First Ship Awaiting Entry
The first cargo vessel, carrying liquified gas for the LNG Terminal at Puthuvype from RasGas in Qatar, has arrived off the port, and is anchored until necessary dredging work is completed, reports Business Standard. With the shipment, the Petronet LNG terminal, with an annual capacity of five million tonnes, is all set to commence operations soon. The vessel, carrying about one lakh cubic metre of LNG, is anchored about 20 km off Kochi, port sources informed the Business Standard. Dredging work is going on at the port and the ship would enter the harbour in another three days.
Petronet LNG to Float Subsidiary
Natural gas importer Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) plans to float a shipping subsidiary overseas to haul gas to its greenfield re-gassification terminal of 2.5 million tonnes per annum capacity proposed at Kochi in Kerala. The diversification plan has been unveiled in the tender conditions stipulated by Petronet for selecting ship owners and operators for transporting LNG to the Kochi terminal. This is a departure from the first two shipping tenders finalized by Petronet for hauling gas from RasGas in Qatar to Dahej in Gujarat, wherein it holds a 15 percent stake each in the first two tankers and 23 percent stake in the third tanker.
