Brazilian mining firm Vale will install five Rotor Sails from Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd (“Anemoi”), a supplier of wind-assisted propulsion technology for commercial vessels, onboard a 400,000 dwt Valemax, the world’s largest ore carrier. The vessel is owned by Omani shipowner, Asyad.Five 35-meter-tall, 5-meter-diameter cylindrical sails will be installed on the Sohar Max VLOC. The Rotor Sails will be installed on Anemoi’s folding deployment system, whereby the sails can be folded from vertical to mitigate impact on air draft and cargo handling operations.

At least 12 sailors on a Chinese-flagged cargo ship have died of suspected food poisoning off Vietnam's southern coast, a government official said on Friday.After receiving distress calls from the ship's captain, authorities in the island district of Con Dao deployed helicopters to bring the victims and nine other sailors to a hospital onshore, according to Huynh Trung Son, a local government official."The survivors are in critical condition and our medical staff are trying to save them," Son said via telephone."We haven't been able to identify the nationality of the sailors, but they are likely Chinese," he added.The Wu Zhou 8 ship was en route from Thailand to China, he said, adding that it was not immediately clear what the ship was transporting.The ship was built in 2013 with a carryin

Chinese refiner Shenghong Petrochemical Corp, part of the listed Jiangsu Eastern Shenghong Co 000301.SZ, has readied a new terminal to receive Very Large Crude Carriers and boost the refiner's logistics efficiency, a company representative said. Alaskaborg completed a special voyage from the Baltic to the Far East.The 15,750 DWT geared vessel from the Wagenborg fleet combined a bulk cargo and project cargo in both box-shaped holds. With this voyage, the m.v. Alaskaborg again demonstrates the flexibility and possibilities of the Wagenborg fleet.First in Tornio, Finland, the ice-classed Alaskaborg loaded 13.000 tonnes of ferrochrome. Second, a project cargo consisting of gas turbines and generators was loaded in Norrköping, Sweden.Using the bulkheads and tween decks, the last project cargo was loaded in Saint Petersburg.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced the delivery of the LNG carrier CESI Lianyungang, which was ordered by the joint venture of China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited (CCSC) and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC), at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Hudong) on May 31. The CESI Lianyungang is the sixth vessel in the China LNG Transportation Project announced in April 2013, and will sail under a long-term charter transporting LNG that SINOPEC purchases from the Australia Pacific LNG Project. This project, which built LNG carriers in China, follows the ExxonMobil LNG project, announced in March 2010  (four newbuilding LNG carriers were ordered from Hudong and delivered by April 2016).

The Ocean Alliance has launched its new Day Two Product with an estimated 3.6 million TEU carrying capacity provided by approximately 340 containerships deployed on 41 services. The new offering will commence in April 2018. Alliance partners CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen and OOCL will offer 20 Transpacific services, six Asia-Europe services, four Asia-Mediterranean services, four Transatlantic services, five Asia-Middle East services and two Asia-Red Sea services. “Ocean Alliance has been a fantastic success from a customer perspective since its launch last spring and we are very enthusiastic to announce our Day Two Product,” said Olivier Nivoix, Senior Vice President Ocean Alliance Lines.

Two maritime pilots who defied fire to bring a burning ship to safety, averting a major maritime catastrophe, received the 2017 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during the 2017 IMO awards ceremony, held on Monday (27 November). Pilots Captain Michael G. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips, from Houston, United States, were recognized for their role in averting a major tragedy in September 2016. The ship they were piloting, the 247 meters-long tanker Aframax River, broke down in the Houston Ship Channel in the middle of the night and burst into flames after colliding with mooring dolphins. APL announced the launch of a new Korea China Straits (KCS) service that will serve the key Asian markets of China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The weekly service will link Nansha in South China to the Straits of Singapore and Port Klang as well as Indonesia; offer superior transit between Indonesia and Manila; and call Lianyungang in Jiangsu where few carriers provide access to. The KCS service will reinforce APL’s footprint in Intra-Asia where the carrier seeks to fortify its presence as a leading ocean carrier. The offering injects new capacity that allows APL to transport shipments from North Asia to its network of ports across Southeast Asia. It also offers yet another option that shippers can leverage for market access and competitive advantage.

Members of the OCEAN ALLIANCE, COSCO Container Lines, CMA CGM, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line,  signed a document entitled the Day One Product, which sets out the proposed OCEAN ALLIANCE’s network, including port rotation for each service loop. The Day One network intends to deploy around 350 container vessels with an estimated total carrying capacity of 3.5 million TEUs to provide one of the most comprehensive service coverage in the market on the following trade lanes. Interschalt  maritime systems AG, a provider of maritime software and services for navigation and communication equipment (NavCom), as well as the manufacturer of the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR 4G[e] and S-VDR), has expanded its Asian service network by designating Seven Seas Electronic Co. Ltd as its preferred service partner in China. Seven Seas Electronic Co. Ltd will be responsible for installing, commissioning, retrofitting and maintaining VDR G4[e], S-VDR, and MER-(s)-VDR systems, and for carrying out the annual VDR performance tests (APT) in line with IMO regulations. On behalf of Interschalt , the company will also take over a wide range of maintenance work on navigation and communication equipment for the Chinese market.

Mega-ore carrier  Valemax  Yuan Zhuo Hai, which is owned by China Ore Shipping,  has arrived Dongjiakou Port in Qingdao for unloading iron ore. This is the first entry of such a bulk carrier tonnage in the sea port of China for the past two years. Yuan Zhuo Hai is one of four 400,000dwt VLOCs acquired by China Ore Shipping from Brazilian ore giant Vale. The 400,000 dwt Valemax is expected to be part-laden, having called at Vale's Subic Bay iron ore transhipment terminal in Philippines after loading its initial cargo at the miner's Brazilian Itaqui port, according to Platts vessel tracking tool, cFlow. China’s total international shipping volume will reach 6.2bn tons, which will account for 17% of the world’s shipping volume, says 2030 China Shipping Development Outlook report published by the Shanghai International Shipping Institute. Container throughput in China will reach 505 million 20-foot-equivalent units by 2030, three super container hub ports will be formed in Shanghai, Qingdao and Hong Kong, and Chinese firms will become global container terminal operators. In 2030, China’s coastal shipping volume is projected to reach well over 3.3 billion tonnes, and its coastal container shipping volume around 116 million TEU, taking up nearly half of China’s total coastal transportation. China’s ship financing will also account for 30 percent of the world’s volume.

China has amended rules around ships it will allow to berth at mainland ports, paving the way for Brazilian miner Vale to ship iron ore in its giant 400,000 deadweight tons (DWT) carriers. Vale's mega ships, the world's biggest bulk ore carriers, have been barred from China since January 2012 due to rules which disallowed ships of more than 250,000 dwt in capacity. An internal circular issued last week by the Ministry of Transport and seen by Reuters on Wednesday said it would now recognise ships with capacity of 400,000 dwt. It suggests that ports able to accommodate such large ships can now apply for permission to receive them, analysts said.

China will expand a scheme to speed up tax refunds for companies that export via a Shanghai port, the government said on Thursday, as it looks to boost the city's role as an international shipping centre. Exporters that send products abroad via Shanghai's Yangshan deep water port, will from next month be able to recoup some taxes as soon as ships set sail for Shanghai from feeder ports in Nanjing, Suzhou, Lianyungang, Wuhu, Jiujiang, Qingdao, Wuhan and Yueyang. Previously only Qingdao and Wuhan were included in the scheme, with tax refunds on goods sent from other ports of origin only paid when cargoes eventually left Shanghai. On August 1, Hamburg Süd will open an office in Nanjing, China, to be headed by general manager Steven Pu. Hamburg Süd now operates from 20 locations in Greater China. All tasks previously carried out by the Ben Line agency will be taken over by the new Hamburg Süd office. This includes daily operations, as well as sales, customer order management and container and intermodal activities. Services to and from Nanjing will be operated using feeder ships from the ports of Shanghai and Ningbo.

LYG-PSA Container Terminal (LPCT) was officially opened today by Lianyungang Municipal Party Committee Member & Director-General of Lianyungang Port Authority Mr Wu Yi Qiao, Lianyungang Port Group (LPG) Chairman Mr Bai Li Qun and PSA International Group CEO Mr Tan Chong Meng.
