Wärtsilä 50DF Engine Operates on Ethane

The Wärtsilä 50DF marine engine has been tested and certified to run on ethane (LEG) fuel. The testing program was carried out by Wärtsilä in close collaboration with Evergas, an owner and operator of seaborne petrochemical and liquid gas transport vessels. "We are very pleased that the Wärtsilä engines will be capable of utilizing ethane boil-off gas as fuel. It increases our operational efficiency and improves flexibility in the bunkering of fuels. All in all it results in a significant reduction in operating costs, while also providing a minimal environmental footprint. It also enables us to offer our customers increased flexibility, which has a monetary value to them," said Steffen Jacobsen, the CEO of Evergas.

ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships

Classification society ClassNK has published the third version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships which aims to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety and explosion prevention measure. As restrictions on sulfur emissions within ECAs tightened to 0.1% on January 1, 2015 amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, attention has turned to the potential of natural gas as a sulfur-free, cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil.

ClassNK Releases v3 Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships

ClassNK has released the third version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships. The updated version provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety, and explosion prevention measures. As restrictions on sulfur emissions within ECAs tightened to 0.1% on January 1, 2015 amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, attention has turned to the potential of natural gas as a sulfur-free, cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil. Abundant shale gas reserves and recent developments in non-conventional energy resources have also led to an increase in gas fuelled newbuildings and projects.

MEPC Makes Progress on Energy Efficiency, Emissions

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met for its 67th session from October 13-17, 2014, at IMO Headquarters in London. The MEPC approved the Third IMO GHG Study 2014 providing updated estimates for greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The Third IMO GHG Study 2014 estimates that international shipping emitted 796 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2012, against 885 million metric tons in 2007. This represented 2.2% of the global emissions of CO2 in 2012, against 2.8% in 2007.

Wärtsilä announce their new medium-speed 46DF engine which is capable of operating on natural gas, heavy fuel oil, or marine diesel oil. “With this newly launched product, Wärtsilä has raised the industry standard even higher, since it offers simultaneously drastically lower specific fuel consumption, both in gas and diesel fuel mode, remarkably higher output, and extremely attractive lifecycle costs compared to any other alternative currently available on the market,” says Mr Lars Anderson, Vice President 4-stroke Sales, Wärtsilä Ship Power.

ClassNK Updates Safety Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships

Classification society has released its second version of the Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships. This updated version reflects the requirements for the design of natural gas fuelled ships based on the outcome of discussions held at IMO regarding the International Code of Safety for ships using gases or other low flash-point fuels (IGF Code). With regulations curbing atmospheric pollution and greenhouse gas emissions growing stricter amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, the industry is turning towards the use of natural gas as a potential cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil. Expected reductions in gas prices due to the recent development of non-conventional energy resources such as shale gas has also led to an increase in gas fuelled ship newbuildings and projects.

Wärtsilä has further developed its dual fuel technology and introduced a more powerful version of its popular Wärtsilä 34DF engine. The Wärtsilä 34DF engine has proven to be a highly efficient and reliable solution for a wide range of vessel applications. The latest version is expected to expand that range even further. Lower fuel consumption of this engine will further improve its environmental performance. Available since 2003, the Wärtsilä 34DF is mainly used in the LNG-fuelled offshore support vessel market, particularly for tugs, ferries, Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax and workboats.

Leading Class Society Aims to Address Safety Measures for the Use of Natural Gas as Ship Fuel. As regulations curbing atmospheric pollution and greenhouse gas emissions grow stricter amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, attention is turning to the potential of natural gas as a cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil. Liquefied natural gas is widely used on vessels designed to transport the commodity and has started to be introduced on other types of ships. Around 30 vessels, including many Norwegian ferries and offshore support ships in the North Sea, are powered by LNG with takeup of the fuel expected to increase in the near future.
