Conrad Shipyard hosted a keel laying ceremony for a new 6,500 cubic yard trailing suction hopper dredge it is building for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD). Delivery is scheduled before the end of the first quarter of 2023.The dredge will feature two 800mm suction pipes and will be able to dredge at depths of up to 100 feet. The vessel has principal dimensions of approximately 346 feet in length, 69 feet in breadth and 23 feet in depth, and total installed horsepower of 16,500. Strategically located along the Louisiana Gulf Coast at the junction of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Atchafalaya river, the Morgan City Harbor and Terminal District has just completed construction of a medium draft vessel port. This major Louisiana inter-modal transportation facility features an 800-ft. concrete wharf; a 20,000-sq. ft. fire protected transit shed, two-paved cargo marshalling yards covering 117,000 sq. ft., two-rail sidings connecting directly to the cross country Burlington-Northern/Santa Fe main railroad line, a large crane and forklifts to handle containerized cargo and ready highway access to the US Highway 90 (Interstate 49) freeway.

Recent spills in the Gulf of Mexico have demonstrated how tried and true oil spill recovery has combined with chemical dispersant technology to combat oil spills. On October 1, 1998, when a slick tracked to a crude oil pipeline leak off Louisiana's Gulf Coast was detected, the ready forces of oil responders were immediately activated. Along with a small armada of oil spill response vessels (OSRVs) hurrying to the site of the spill traced to a Chevron pipeline, a plane loaded with Corexit 9527 dispersant was deployed to shrink the growing oil slick estimated to be 37 kilometers long. By day two of the spill, dispersant operations had successfully shrunk the slick enabling OSRVs to contain the oil and finish the cleanup job.
