Iconic USS Ranger Dismantled

A two-year project to dismantle and recycle the decommissioned U.S. Navy vessel USS Ranger (CV-61) has recently concluded. Ordered in 1954 and commissioned in 1957, the Ranger was the first U.S. carrier vessel built as an angled-deck ship from inception. She served in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, and earned 13 battle stars for her service in the Vietnam War. During her 37 years of service, she also appeared in blockbuster films such as Top Gun and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Deputy Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Navy, pay a visit to 'USS Makin Island' (LHD 8). Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus met recently with several flag and general officers in the area on board USS Makin Island (LHD 8) for a leadership breakfast and to tour the ship. Following breakfast, the guests were taken on a tour of Makin Island and were able to meet many of the sailors who help to keep the ship fully mission capable. Lt. Cmdr. Teamwork Key in Kitty Hawk’s SRA progress

As USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) enters its fourth month of a ship's restricted availability (SRA) period April 6, Sailors, Ship's Repair Facility (SRF) workers, and Japanese contractors work together to ensure the Navy's oldest active-duty warship remains in fighting shape. Maintenance and repairs being completed aboard Kitty Hawk affect almost every space and compartment on the ship. “As Kitty Hawk approaches her 45th birthday, I believe the team we have here is key to keeping Kitty Hawk battle ready. I know she’s as combat ready today as any other ship in the fleet thanks to the work done by the 2,000 Japanese contractors, SRF workers and the ship’s crew,” said Capt. Ed McNamee, Kitty Hawk’s commanding officer.

NORSHIPCO Wins Second Kennedy Contract Worth Over $21M

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today a $21,694,925 award to its subsidiary, NORSHIPCO, by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, Jacksonville, Fla., for the firm fixed-price Extended Selective Restricted Availability (EDSRA) on the Navy's aircraft carrier, USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). NORSHIPCO previously won a $10 million contract in November for work on the KENNEDY. The work is scheduled to begin in January 2003 and to be completed by September 2003 at the Naval Station Mayport, Fla., the ship's home port. The work package focuses on work in two of the four engine rooms and includes main machinery room repairs consisting of tanks, boilers, forced draft blowers, steam valves, reduction gears, main feed pumps, main condenser, lube oil pumps, and piping.
