So when one of these motors fails at sea, the ramifications can range from minor annoyance to complete shutdown, which can prove costly in time and money. This was the scenario that Sealion Shipping Ltd. faced when its aft starboard azimuth thruster failed in the waters off Mexico, rendering the vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system inoperable.

In just 90 days, the Harris Pye Group successfully completed the survey and upgrade of Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc’s (DODI) dynamically positioned drillship, the Ocean Clipper. All work was completed within schedule. Totalling 247,235 man hours and utilising a 600-plus workforce, the contract was one of the largest offshore oil and gas projects for the South Wales headquartered company. Despite the time-critical schedule, extraordinarily high man hours and large workforce, safety standards were superb and there were no serious accidents or injuries to any personnel.

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $27,056,613 cost-plus-fixed fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2303) to exercise an option for additional class services associated with the detail design and construction of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer. This work will provide technical and industrial engineering in the interpretation and application of the detailed design to support construction and the maintenance of the ship design. Work will be performed in Bath, Maine, and is expected to be completed by December 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

Bergen, Norway based Scandinavian Electric Systems(SES) has secured orders worth around NOK 350 million for delivery of complete Diesel-Electric propulsion and Automation systems for two plus option for three Jackup Vessels with Lamprell plc in Dubai. The Shipowner is Seajacks International Ltd.. The contract for the two first vessels of NOK 140 million are fixed and firm with optional contracts for the three next vessels worth approx.
