Canadian Coast Guard Awards Contract for Icebreaker Life Extension

Canada's Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Jean-Yves Duclos, on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier, announced a contract award following a competitive process, valued at approximately $44 million (including taxes) to Ocean Industries Inc. for the vessel life extension of the CCGS Griffon.Scheduled to take place from June 2025 to October 2026, the vessel life extension work entails refurbishing and repairing the main propulsion motors…

COSCO Shipping Development’s 700 TEU electric container vessel (N997) has been launched at COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou). In the case of the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR), you call your friends in Norway.That is exactly what the Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral Lorin C. Selby did when he enlisted the help of the Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker and offshore patrol vessel, the CGV Svalbard, to retrieve oceanographic moorings containing irreplaceable data.

US Icebreaker Suffers Fire, Engine Failure

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) is making an early return to its Seattle homeport, and its future Arctic operations have been canceled after the 21-year-old medium icebreaker suffered a fire in one of its main propulsion motors last week.The electrical fire was reported at 9:30 p.m. on August 18 while the Healy was 60 nautical miles off of Seward, Alaska, where it had embarked 11 scientists for research and security mission in the Arctic.An onboard fire team disconnected the affected motor…

Specialty Motors Keep Shipping Afloat

Whether for sophisticated thrusters or naval weaponry, or equipment such as compressors, winches or pumps, large specialty motors are used throughout the marine industry. So when one of these motors fails at sea, the ramifications can range from minor annoyance to complete shutdown, which can prove costly in time and money. This was the scenario that Sealion Shipping Ltd. faced when its aft starboard azimuth thruster failed in the waters off Mexico, rendering the vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system inoperable.

Harris Pye Completes Brazilian Offshore Project

In just 90 days, the Harris Pye Group successfully completed the survey and upgrade of Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc’s (DODI) dynamically positioned drillship, the Ocean Clipper. All work was completed within schedule. Totalling 247,235 man hours and utilising a 600-plus workforce, the contract was one of the largest offshore oil and gas projects for the South Wales headquartered company. Despite the time-critical schedule, extraordinarily high man hours and large workforce, safety standards were superb and there were no serious accidents or injuries to any personnel.

New Navy Contracts

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $27,056,613 cost-plus-fixed fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2303) to exercise an option for additional class services associated with the detail design and construction of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer. This work will provide technical and industrial engineering in the interpretation and application of the detailed design to support construction and the maintenance of the ship design. Work will be performed in Bath, Maine, and is expected to be completed by December 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

SES Signed Contracts for delivery of Electrical and Automation Systems

Bergen, Norway based Scandinavian Electric Systems(SES) has secured orders worth around NOK 350 million for delivery of complete Diesel-Electric propulsion and Automation systems for two plus option for three Jackup Vessels with Lamprell plc in Dubai. The Shipowner is Seajacks International Ltd.. The contract for the two first vessels of NOK 140 million are fixed and firm with optional contracts for the three next vessels worth approx.
