Pelagus 3D and Doosan Enerbility Forge Additive Manufacturing Alliance

INTELLIAN FleetBroadband Xtra Solution Approved by Inmarsat

Inmarsat announced that the Global Xpress (GX) and FleetBroadband terminals manufactured by Intellian, are now approved for use with FleetBroadband Xtra. Designed to enable maritime customers to benefit from high-speed broadband connectivity, Fleet Xpress is an-integrated Ka-band and L-band solution that utilizes capacity from the first GX satellite in commercial service, 1-5 F1, and Inmarsat’s existing Inmarsat-4 fleet. A key Inmarsat terminal manufacturing partner, Intellian continues to support Inmarsat’s GX network services. The recently unveiled Intellian 65cm GX60 and 1m GX100 are both approved for use, along with Intellian’s FB250 and FB500 for FleetBroadband Xtra.

VOS BWTS to Be Tested on APL Containership

Shipboard testing to be conducted on the vessel APL England as NEI takes the next step towards full USCG Type Approval for its Venturi Oxygen Stripping (VOS) Ballast Water Treatment System. NEI Treatment Systems announced that the container vessel APL England will be used for the shipboard testing phase of their VOS Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), to begin in the early summer of 2015. The APL England is a 67.9K DWT container vessel, trading between China and multiple ports on the U.S. West Coast. The vessel utilizes a VOS system operating at 1,250 m3/hr., and was installed seven years ago. The retrofit project was completed as an in-service “riding” installation.

Intelsat 27 Launch Unsuccessful

Intelsat S.A., the world's leading provider of satellite services, has announced  that at 1:57 a.m. EST, the launch of the Intelsat 27 satellite failed approximately 40 seconds after liftoff. A Zenit 3SL launch vehicle was carrying the satellite built by Boeing. Intelsat 27 was to operate from 304.5º East, an orbital location currently occupied by Intelsat 805 and Galaxy 11. The satellite was designed to serve customers in North America, South America, the North Atlantic and Europe. Sea Launch will establish a Failure Review Oversight Board to determine the cause of the failure. Service to customers on Intelsat 805 and Galaxy 11 will not be interrupted as a result of today's event.

Immarsat Contracts 'Global Express' Satellite Terminal Manufacturers

Inmarsat signs contracts with initial land satellite terminal manufacturing partners for its forthcoming Global Xpress® service. Cobham Satcom, Paradigm Comm and Skyware Global will manufacture 0.6 to 2.4 metre aperture terminals to deliver up to 50Mbps downlink speeds. The range will cover fixed, transportable, 'fly-away' and 'manpack' terminal types. The terminals have been specifically designed for operation in the Ka-band and will utilise a new core module developed by VT iDirect to provide state-of-the-art capabilities. Scheduled for service introduction in 2014, Global Xpress will offer unprecedented high data rate (HDR) bandwidth and global coverage.

ECDIS Familiarisation Course On Show at Upcoming Expo

Safebridge will show a full working version of its ECDIS familiarisation course at SMM Hamburg. The full working version of the ECDIS familiarisation course will be linked via the web to the Safebridge online server and the original manufacturer’s own software. Having released the first course covering type-specific training on the Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT5 in May, Safebridge is now finalising courseware for its other manufacturing partners, which include Raytheon Anschuetz, Transas Marine, JRC, Imtech, ChartWorld, Sam Electronics and 7Cs. The Safebridge courses are true simulation conducted remotely and not using CDs or DVDs, which allow the student to study from anywhere with a good Internet connection.

Horizon Line to Launch U.S. Inland Express Service

Horizon Lines, Inc. (NYSE: HRZ), aleading U.S. domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics company, announced it will launch express intermodal container service to key inland U.S. cities when it begins the new Five Star Express (FSX) trans-Pacific liner service in December.
