Volvo Penta Names Kelleher VP Customer Support, Training

Volvo Penta of the Americas announced the appointment of Tony Kelleher as vice president for customer support and training. Kelleher will be responsible to support both marine and industrial segments within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Kelleher was previously director of the marine leisure segment with responsibility for OEM and dealer sales and partnership development for North America. He has also served as head of the service department and purchasing director within Volvo Penta of the Americas.

It seems like a lifetime coming, but the IMO International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) has been approved and will enter into force on September 8, 2017. Deemed as an environmental necessity, it creates an enormous operational challenge for the maritime industry. As ship owners, system installers and BWM system manufacturers alike prepare for the many challenges associated with implementation, it would be wise to more closely evaluate the real (and sometimes hidden) risks to system operators and manufacturers.

Gomtec to Drive ABB's Robotics Portfolio

ABB announced today acquired Gomtec GmbH to expand its offering in the field of collaborative robots. The parties agreed not to disclose financial terms of the transaction. Gomtec, based near Munich, Germany, is a privately held company that develops mechatronic systems combining mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, control and computer engineering for customers in diverse industries. It has 25 employees. Gomtec’s technology platform will strengthen ABB’s development of a new generation of “safe-by-design” collaborative robots that can be operated outside of cages or protective fencing, expanding opportunities to deploy them in new applications. Gomtec’s acquisition is another step in ABB’s Next Level strategy aimed at accelerating sustainable value creation.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Deploys CICC's Products

Communication Intelligence Computer Corporation, Ltd. (CICC), has signed a licensing agreement for its InkTools(R), biometric, electronic signature and Office Automation (OA) software with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. of Shanghai, China ("Hudong-Zhonghua"). Under the terms of the agreement CICC will provide software licenses and integration services for its InkTools software enabling the use of biometric signature verification for improved security, electronic signatures for automation of traditional paper based processes, as well as the company's Chinese handwriting recognition and natural input solutions to increase user efficiency.

ShipConstructor to Support STEP Import and Export

Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL), the creator of the 3D product modeling software ShipConstructor™ and Industrial Planning Technology, Inc. (IPT) are cooperating on the development of a translator that will enable ShipConstructor to import and export STEP files containing pipe, HVAC, and equipment data. This technology will significantly enhance ShipConstructor’s interoperability in large shipyard environments, allow organizations to more easily access legacy data, and simplify the long term storage and retrieval of archival product model data throughout the entire product lifecycle. IPT is developing the translators using the all-new ShipConstructor Application Programming Interface (API) creating intelligent distributed system objects directly in the ShipConstructor Product Model Database.
