Every year, MarineNews chooses a handful of vessels delivered in the past 12 months and bestows upon them the distinction of “Great Boats.” The boats are chosen for innovations in design, construction and utilization. Following are the 17 vessels or groups of vessels chosen as the Great Boats of 2000. Crowley Marine Services delivered Alert, Attentive, and Aware, a series of three 140-ft., 10,000-hp Prevention and Response Tugs (PRTs), to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez, Alaska. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

On August 29, 2006 Moran Towing Corporation of New Canaan, Connecticut and Washburn & Doughty Shipyard of East Boothbay, Maine signed a Letter of Commitment for the construction of six additional tug boats. These vessels will follow the two 5100 HP 92’ ASDs and two 121’ Intercon Tugs currently under construction at Washburn & Doughty for Moran. Moran Towing anticipates building six 92’ ASDs for its ship docking fleet, but has reserved the right to build alternative vessels, including Intercon Tugs or 98’ ASDs, if necessary. The construction of all ten vessels reflects Moran’s steadfast commitment to provide its customers with the most powerful, technologically advanced and reliable tug fleet in the industry, according to Paul Tregurtha, Moran’s Chairman and CEO.

California Fish & Game recently took delivery of P/V Thresher, a 54 ft. all-aluminum catamaran, designed by Teknicraft of Aukland, New Zealand, and built by Kvichak Marine, of Seattle, Wash. The partially foil-supported catamaran will be stationed in Dana Point as a Fish and Game Marine Enforcement patrol vessel for Southern California. The cat's beam is 20.2 ft., and weighs nearly 28 tons fully loaded. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3196 DITA diesel engines, driving 30 in. stainless steel propellers through Twin Disc MG 5114A gears, Thresher cruises at 26 knots with a top speed of 30 knots. Deck equipment includes an aft deck A-frame to deploy and retrieve a customer-supplied Hurricane inflatable.

Washburn & Doughty delivered Karen Moran, second in a series of six identical Z Drive tugs being constructed for the Moran Towing Corporation of Greenwich, Conn. Karen Moran will join sistership Marci Moran in Norfolk, Va., where the two vessels are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work. Karen Moran measures 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. and is built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS with notation: Towing Service standards. Service speed for Karen Moran is 13 knots and it has a 32,000 gallon fuel oil capacity. The vessel is powered by two EMD 16-645-E2 main engines rated at 4,000 hp, 900 rpm and driving Ulstein Z Drives. Karen Moran uses Hule D fendering for the side and sub fendering and Schuyler Soft Loop on both the bow and stern.

Washburn & Doughty launched Marci Moran, a 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. Z-drive tractor tug for Moran Towing Corporation. Marci Moran is the first of six tugs being built by Washburn & Doughty for Moran over the next year. Upon delivery, Marci Moran will report to its homeport in Norfolk, Va., where it will assist U.S. Navy vessels. A state-of-the-art Ulstein Z-drive propulsion system, powered by two EMD 16-645-E2 main engines, each rated at 2,100 hp @ 900 rpm, will provide extraordinary maneuverability and power.

Tracy Moran will join sisterships Marci Moran (1999 MarineNews Great Boat), Karen Moran and Susan Moran in Norfolk, Va. where they are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work.
