Ballard's Marine Fuel Cell Module Earns DNV Type Approval

Ballard Power Systems announced it has received Europe’s industry-first type approval from classification society DNV for its marine fuel cell module FCwave.Ballard said its high-power FCwave module is a flexible solution that can support the energy needs of various vessel types as well as onshore power. Trelleborg Expands Its Marine Operations in India

Highly automated, fully variable assembly process allows Cat to provide uniform service to a myriad of marine customers. But, MCOE is only one part of Cat’s new business strategy. In August of 2007, the first Cat marine engine left Caterpillar’s new Marine Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Greenville, South Carolina. In the ensuing years, countless engines have gone through the same process. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems brings together all the sales and service activities for Cat and MaK branded marine products within Caterpillar Inc. The organization provides marine power solutions (high and medium speed with outputs from 11 kW to 16,000 kW) and customer service from a single source for the global ocean-going, commercial and pleasure craft markets.

GE (France) to Supply Propulsion Systems for 23 New LNG Carriers

Korean companies Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries contract GE technology. The GE equipment will be installed on 23 new LNG ships and represents total propulsion power of 1,105 megawatts. Traditionally, the propulsion of LNG tankers has been based on boil-off boilers and steam turbines. In recent years, more and more ship owners have turned to dual-fuel engine systems combined with electric propulsion as more efficient solutions, up to 30 percent at high loads.

Cat C32 ACERT Repowers M/S Mount Washington

For the first time in 63 seasons of scenic cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, the M/S Mount Washington will rely on clean diesel power from a pair of newly installed Cat C32 ACERT marine engines. Through the help of funds from the U.S. government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Mount Washington Cruises received an EPA grant to replace older diesel engines with new “greener” technology. The M/S Mount Washington was one of nine projects funded in the northeast and the only project funded in New Hampshire.

Cat C32 ACERT Engines for Dutch Pilot Boats

Loodswezen, the Dutch pilot organization responsible for coordinating large ship arrivals and departures in the port of The Netherlands, chose Kvichak Marine Industries in Seattle, Washington, USA, to build a boat designed by naval architecture firm Camarc Design in the UK, which had also designed Loodswezen’s current high speed pilot boats. Delivered in March 2010, the 72-ft all-weather fast pilot boat, M/V Aquila, is powered by twin Cat C32 ACERT engines, rated at 1300 bhp (970 bkW) at 2100 rpm.

CSC Wins $25 Million U.S. Navy Order

Computer Sciences Corporation has won a task order from the U.S. Navy to continue its support of the Navy's Strategic Sealift program, including support for the completion and delivery of two new Large Medium-Speed Roll-On/Roll-Off (LMSR) supply ships. The task order, awarded under a contract CSC initially won with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in 1991, is valued at $25 million if all options are exercised over a three-year period. The company will provide engineering and design facilities as well as professional and engineering services to support the culmination of the decade-long acquisition program for Strategic Sealift supply ships.
