Ammonia Marine Fuel Study Gets $6.7 Million Grant

A group of academic and industrial partners were awarded a $6.7 million grant by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to accelerate understanding, technologies and policies relating to the use of ammonia as a sustainable fuel. ABS Grants AIP for Ammonia Bunkering Vessel Design

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. on Tuesday announced that the company, along with ITOCHU Corporation has obtained approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for an ammonia bunkering vessel concept.The project is part of a joint development study on ammonia fuel supply chain in Singapore. MOL, which already has experience and knowledge of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessels, is taking part in the project together with its partners in the LNG bunkering business in Singapore-TotalEnergies Marine Fuels Pte. Ltd.

Jumbo's Fairplayer to Test Biofuel Oil

Green Maritime Methanol Project Gets a Boost

One of the most effective and easiest fuel reduction operations is reducing the engine power by reducing the speed of a vessel. Out of the total operational costs of a vessel, fuel costs account for, by far, the highest proportion. When fuel prices soared, the technical experts of one of the world’s biggest shipping companies set about to solve the problem, and slowing down was the solution they devised. By 2009 significant fuel savings resulted from sailing its ships at 12 knots instead of 24, and ”Slow Steaming” officially became the standard operating procedure in their fleet.

Keeping up with the Jones (Act)

The continued existence of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 carries with it substantial economic and financial benefits. Its repeal could be catastrophic. The three-legged stool commonly referred to as the Jones Act is officially known as the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. For the purposes of national defense and growth of domestic commerce, it most simply calls for the waterborne transport of cargo and/or passengers between U.S. ports to be limited to U.S. flagged vessels. Its continued existence carries with it substantial economic and financial benefits. Its repeal could be catastrophic.

Two US Firms Collaborate on SCR Design

Tenneco and Cormetech sign agreement to design marine engine ultra-large diameter selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts. The MARPOL Annex VI and EPA Tier IV regulations require an 80% reduction in NOx emissions, thus driving the need for engines to include aftertreatment strategies such as SCR. Tenneco’s SCR solution, incorporating the Cormetech catalyst, will be designed to help the marine industry comply with the new emission regulations. “Tenneco is an established leader in designing and developing diesel aftertreatment solutions, supplying commercial vehicle and engine manufacturers globally,” said Tim Jackson, Tenneco chief technology officer. “For more than 20 years, Cormetech has provided reliable state-of-the-art SCR catalyst for the reduction of NOx emissions.

Wärtsilä, MAN Diesel & Turbo Continue Research Project

In March this year, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposal to designate waters off the North American coasts as an Emission Control Area was adopted by IMO, the International Maritime Organization. The North American ECA is a key part of a comprehensive EPA program to address harmful emissions from large ships. Which are the time schedules of upcoming emission regulations? A Tidal Wave of New Regulations

The management ballast water discharges began with the enactment of the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act of 1990 (NANPCA) as an effort to prevent the introduction of additional invasive species into the Great Lakes. Since then, NANPCA was amended by the National Invasive Species Act of 1996 and the issue has progressed over the intervening years to a much larger campaign to regulate all vessel discharges into U.S. waters. Ballast water management has been the subject of litigation, regulation, and legislation at the state and federal level.

EPA: Low Emission Inboard Marine Engines Developed

Over the past several years, EPA has worked with the marine industry, U.S. Coast Guard, California Air Resources Board, Southwest Research Institute, and others, including several marine engine manufacturers on a series of development and test programs for the use of catalytic exhaust aftertreatment on sterndrive/inboard (SD/I) marine engines. Results from this testing suggest that significant emission reductions can be achieved from SD/I engines through the use of catalysts. According to the EPA, the fresh water durability study has shown that these emission reductions can be achieved over the lifetime of the engine. EPAe anticipate that the salt water testing will show similar results.
