Wärtsilä said it will provide the propulsion solutions for a new 115-meter high-speed ferry being built by Austal at the Australian shipbuilder’s yard in the Philippines for Danish operator Molslinjen.The newbuild will feature four Wärtsilä 31 engines, recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine, and four Wärtsilä WXJ1500SRI waterjets. John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has introduced new propulsion ratings to its EPAMarine Tier 3 engine offerings. The new PowerTech 4045TFM85 propulsion ratings expand the John Deere Marine Tier 3 lineup with two ratings for continuous and heavy duty applications (M1 rating with 75 kW (100 hp) at 2,400 rpm and M2 rating with93 kW (125 hp) at 2,500 rpm). Caterpillar Marine today announced the open order board of the Cat 3516C United States EPA Tier 4 propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) power solutions. In addition to being EPA Tier 4 certified, the 3516C solutions are IMO II certified and IMO III compliant. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine is available in a ‘B’ rating of 2,240 bKW at 1,800 rpm and a ‘C’ rating of 2350 bKW at 1,800 rpm. An auxiliary engine is available in a rating of 2,250 ekW at 1,800 rpm. Finally, the diesel electric propulsion solution is available in a 2,250 eKW rating at 1,800 rpm.

On display at the Caterpillar booth this year will be the Cat  C32 ACERT  EPA Tier 3 certified marine engine, which is now also offered as an EPA Tier 3 certified auxiliary engine and an EPA Tier 3 certified generator set. The first engine platforms to be rolled out as Tier 4 solutions are two legendary performers in the commercial marine industry: the Cat 3516C marine engine as well as the Cat 280 marine engine. The C280 engine will be available as Tier 4 certified in both the 8 and 12 cylinder configurations. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine as well as the Cat C280-8 Tier 4 certified engine and Cat C280-12 Tier 4 certified engine are now all available for customers to order through the global Cat dealer network. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine will be available in ratings of 2,240 bkW and 2350 bkW at 1,800 rpm. Exhibitions are traditional launching points for major equipment makers, and Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is no exception. Recently featured in the hit television show “Shark Wranglers” on the History Channel, OCEARCH is a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on the ocean’s giants. Much of their recent work has been dedicated to solving mysteries surrounding great white sharks. The OCEARCH team sails the globe conducting scientific expeditions onboard the MV OCEARCH, which is powered by 2x Cat® 3412 engines and 1x  C4.4 and 1x  C6.6 generator while serving as an at-sea laboratory. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce starting in January 2012, the legendary Cat 3500C marine engines will enter full production meeting United States EPA Tier 3 regulations. Cat 3500C Tier 3 compliant offerings will include propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines. All Cat 3500C offerings will not require after treatment modules to meet Tier 3 regulations as a result of incorporating innovative fuel and air system modifications into the design of the engines. “We’re pleased to offer our customers impacted by the United States EPA regulations a timely, comprehensive power solution that doesn’t require after treatment or sacrifice performance,” said Bob Hallengren, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Product and Application Manager.

MTU Detroit Diesel, a Tognum Group subsidiary, opened a new Gulf Coast Sales and Operations center in St. Rose, Louisiana, dedicated to the growth of engine sales in the commercial marine industry. The center also houses parts and serves as a logistics hub for MTU’s marine defense customers. The nearly 8,000-square-foot facility is located in the St. James Industrial Park just west of New Orleans. As attested by the variety of companies both inside and out of the marine propulsion realm that are attempting to reshape their companies as a "one-stop-shop", such solutions are intended to add value and better satisfy the group's customers and business partners. An essential tool in this strategy — in Wärtsilä's case — is the new e-business channel, which gives direct access to Wärtsilä's information and services. Shipbuilders increasingly outsource work and look for cost savings to be more competitive.
