Wärtsilä Propulsion Selected for Molslinjen Fast Ferry

Wärtsilä said it will provide the propulsion solutions for a new 115-meter high-speed ferry being built by Austal at the Australian shipbuilder’s yard in the Philippines for Danish operator Molslinjen.The newbuild will feature four Wärtsilä 31 engines, recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine, and four Wärtsilä WXJ1500SRI waterjets. Wärtsilä will also supply its ProTouch bridge controls system. Wärtsilä’s Single-Source Capability Key to New Order

Engine Providers Power Operators' Profits

With an eye towards environmental compliance, operational efficiencies and the bottom line, the Marine News top propulsion providers touch all bases. Sitting down to select the best engine and propulsion manufacturers in the workboat marine space isn’t necessarily the easiest task in the world. Nor is it a linear exercise. Yanmar Names US/Canada West Coast Distributor

Valley Power Systems has entered into a distributor agreement with Yanmar America Corporation for the sale and service of Yanmar’s commercial marine diesel engine line throughout the states of California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. In business for over 65 years, Valley Power Systems provides power and propulsion products for the commercial and pleasure craft marine industries from manufacturers such as MTU, Electro-Motive (EMD), Scania, Northern Lights, Technicold and now Yanmar Commercial Marine.

John Deere Expands Tier 3 Engine Line

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has introduced new propulsion ratings to its EPAMarine Tier 3 engine offerings. The new PowerTech 4045TFM85 propulsion ratings expand the John Deere Marine Tier 3 lineup with two ratings for continuous and heavy duty applications (M1 rating with 75 kW (100 hp) at 2,400 rpm and M2 rating with93 kW (125 hp) at 2,500 rpm). The PowerTech 4.5L ratings join the lineup of John Deere Marine Tier 3 propulsion engines from 75 to 559 kW (100 to 750 hp).The 4045TFM85 ratings meet U.S.

Caterpillar Tier 4 Offering Hits the Market

Caterpillar Marine today announced the open order board of the Cat 3516C United States EPA Tier 4 propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) power solutions. In addition to being EPA Tier 4 certified, the 3516C solutions are IMO II certified and IMO III compliant. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine is available in a ‘B’ rating of 2,240 bKW at 1,800 rpm and a ‘C’ rating of 2350 bKW at 1,800 rpm. An auxiliary engine is available in a rating of 2,250 ekW at 1,800 rpm. Finally, the diesel electric propulsion solution is available in a 2,250 eKW rating at 1,800 rpm.

Caterpillar to Launch Two EPS Tier 4 Marine Engines

The first engine platforms to be rolled out as Tier 4 solutions are two legendary performers in the commercial marine industry: the Cat 3516C marine engine as well as the Cat 280 marine engine. The C280 engine will be available as Tier 4 certified in both the 8 and 12 cylinder configurations. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine as well as the Cat C280-8 Tier 4 certified engine and Cat C280-12 Tier 4 certified engine are now all available for customers to order through the global Cat dealer network. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine will be available in ratings of 2,240 bkW and 2350 bkW at 1,800 rpm. An auxiliary or diesel electric propulsion solution is available in a 2,250 ekW (2368 bkW) rating.

Caterpillar’s Marine Center of Excellence

Highly automated, fully variable assembly process allows Cat to provide uniform service to a myriad of marine customers. But, MCOE is only one part of Cat’s new business strategy. In August of 2007, the first Cat marine engine left Caterpillar’s new Marine Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Greenville, South Carolina. In the ensuing years, countless engines have gone through the same process. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems brings together all the sales and service activities for Cat and MaK branded marine products within Caterpillar Inc. Cat Covers it All

Caterpillar to feature OCEARCH ‘Shark Wranglers’, at upcoming 2012 International Workboat Show, New Orleans. Recently featured in the hit television show “Shark Wranglers” on the History Channel, OCEARCH is a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on the ocean’s giants. Caterpillar Offer 3500C Tier 3 Marine Power Solutions

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce starting in January 2012, the legendary Cat 3500C marine engines will enter full production meeting United States EPA Tier 3 regulations. Cat 3500C Tier 3 compliant offerings will include propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines. All Cat 3500C offerings will not require after treatment modules to meet Tier 3 regulations as a result of incorporating innovative fuel and air system modifications into the design of the engines. “We’re pleased to offer our customers impacted by the United States EPA regulations a timely, comprehensive power solution that doesn’t require after treatment or sacrifice performance,” said Bob Hallengren, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Product and Application Manager.

MTU Detroit Diesel Opens in New Orleans

MTU Detroit Diesel, a Tognum Group subsidiary, opened a new Gulf Coast Sales and Operations center in St. Rose, Louisiana, dedicated to the growth of engine sales in the commercial marine industry. Earlier this year, the company announced that, as The Ship Power Supplier, it offered complete marine power systems for all types of vessels, together with all associated services. As attested by the variety of companies both inside and out of the marine propulsion realm that are attempting to reshape their companies as a "one-stop-shop", such solutions are intended to add value and better satisfy the group's customers and business partners. An essential tool in this strategy — in Wärtsilä's case — is the new e-business channel, which gives direct access to Wärtsilä's information and services. Shipbuilders increasingly outsource work and look for cost savings to be more competitive.
