AHHI Insures 1,900 Vessels in First Year

Cyprus-based American Hellenic Hull Insurance (AHHI) surpassed key targets during its first year of operation: 1,900 insured vessels, written premium income exceeded $10 million and covered 35 million GT on 100% basis, said a press statement. Hidden Exposures Can Sink a Business

Operating on both land and water, ship repairers and marine equipment installers tackle a variety of tasks from general maintenance and repair, to upgrading electrical systems, to installing state-of-the-art navigational systems. Along with these tasks comes a wide array of maritime risk exposures, both large and small, for which the business owner needs to be adequately protected. The tasks of an electrician or welder are challenging enough on their own, but try to do this work on a vessel at sea or in a shipyard, and the technician will find that the hazard level rises dramatically – from making sure that all facets of the systems work together as they should, to the increased fire risk hot welding presents to the safety of the vessel.

Markel Appoints Managing Director in Singapore

Markel International, a specialist insurer with a worldwide product portfolio, appointed Matthew Cannock as Managing Director of Markel International in Singapore. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has approved his appointment as Managing Director and as Principal Officer. Matthew will take up the position at the end of August from Peter Phillips, who has led Markel’s operations in Asia Pacific since 2007. Matthew joined Markel in 2012 as marine underwriter with responsibility for developing Markel’s regional marine capability, focusing on marine hull, cargo and liability business.

IMUA Names Award-winning Marine Underwriter

Gina Domitrovich, AMIM, Senior Marine Underwriter, AIG Global Marine & Energy, is the first recipient of the new American Marine Claims Award, by Inland Marine Underwriters Association’s (IMUA). The award presentation was made closing ceremonies during IMUA"s 83rd Annual Meeting held in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA. As the winner of the American Marine Claims Award, Ms. Domitrovich will receive a $2,000 cash award and a stipend towards attendance at the International Marine Claims Conference held in Dublin, Ireland. The Award based on the developments of several educational requirements including the preparation of an essay. ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

XL Establishes Inland Marine Field Ops

To put its marine insurance experience closer to their clients, agents and brokers, the Marine insurance unit at XL Group plc (NYSE: XL) announced additional underwriting appointments further establishing its inland marine field operation. XL’s new Inland Marine Field team includes Michael Perrotti, Senior Vice President, Marine Field Operations based in Cleveland, Ken Mueller, Regional Vice President in Atlanta, and Ryan Faris, Marine Underwriter in New York. According to Richard DeSimone, President of XL’s US Ocean and Inland Marine unit, “New York, Cleveland and Atlanta are key trading hubs. With these appointments, we’re putting our inland marine underwriting expertise out in our key markets and in closer proximity to our clients.
