Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) said Wednesday it has received DNV GL class approval to offer the Liquified Cargo Operations (LICOS) training course remotely via its Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in Cyprus. The maritime solutions provider is now one of the few organizations within the industry with this capability that meet the standards of the Society of International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators (SIGTTO).With current restrictions on travel, BSM guarantees steady training delivery to its internal gas fleet as well as to external customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A collaboration agreement was signed on Thursday 24 May, in the port of Antwerp between on the one side Port of Antwerp International (PAI), the consultancy and investment subsidiary of Antwerp Port Authority, and APEC, its maritime training centre, and on the other Gambia Ports Authority which manages the port of Banjul in The Gambia. The collaboration, which will mainly take the form of training and consulting, underlines the leading role that the port of Antwerp plays in West Africa. As part of a visit to Belgium the delegation from The Gambia headed by H.E. President Adama Barrow today also called at the port of Antwerp. After a guided tour of the port the programme continued with signature of the collaboration agreement between the ports of Antwerp and Banjul.

Ports provide the critical interface between the ship and the shore. For maritime trade to flow effectively, this vital infrastructure needs to be secure – and this involves people at all levels. A national maritime security training workshop in Djibouti (19-23 March) included practical exercises and a site visit to a nearby port facility as well as class-based training in how to implement the relevant provisions of International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s code on International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS Code) and SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and related guidance. The workshop was held at the Djibouti Regional Maritime Training Centre, Djibouti, and was aimed at port facility security officers and other port security personnel.

Abu Dhabi Ports, the master developer, operator and manager of the Emirate's commercial and community ports, as well as Khalifa Industrial Zone, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jaheziya, the brand name for Tawazun’s Safety, Security and Disaster Management City. The Emirates News Agency WAM reported that Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports, and Jamal Mohamed Al Shamsi, Jaheziya Managing Director signed the MOU at Abu Dhabi Ports Headquarters. The agreement is structured to initiate cooperation between the two companies to work on strategies and introduce a range of maritime training courses and programs, as well as attracting students and interested parties to enroll in them.

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) showcased Dubai's global maritime leadership in the presence of a high-level delegation from City of Glasgow College who commended the manner in which the outstanding experiences of the UAE maritime sector has transformed it into an internationally renowned maritime community. This was done during a visit by an academic delegation from the UK College to the DMCA head office in Dubai to promote collaboration in the vital fields of maritime training, research and studies. Amer Ali, Executive Director of the DMCA, accompanied the guests on a tour of Drydocks World which has been instrumental in achieving the ambitious aspiration of developing Dubai into one of the global Top Ten in terms of maritime efficiency, attractiveness, and competitiveness.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim has highlighted the crucial work of maritime training institutes to train and equip new generations of seafarers and other shipping personnel, during a visit (16 June) to the Romanian Maritime Training Centre CERONAV, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. During the formal festivities, Mr Lim congratulated CERONAV for its work in training seafarers during the past four decades and commended Romania for its active and enthusiastic participation in the IMO Maritime Ambassadors Scheme, with the appointment of three Romanian IMO Maritime Ambassadors, who are helping to promote seafaring as a career and raise the visibility of the shipping industry.

The Indonesian government has ambitious plans for major infrastructure projects in the near future in order to give a massive boost to the country’s economy, already the largest in South-East Asia. Its shopping list includes among other things the construction of dozens of ports to serve the country’s almost 14,000 islands. To achieve this the Indonesian government is looking abroad for international expertise from among others Antwerp, the second-largest port in Europe. During the foreign trade mission headed by Princess Astrid of Belgium, Port Authority chairman Marc Van Peel signed two framework agreements with IPC Corporate University, a subsidiary of the Indonesian Port Corporation (IPC), one of the country’s four national port authorities.

HELMEPA purchased a NAUTIS DNV Class A FMB Simulator and Instructor Station for training of its fleet members. The simulator was delivered and installed by VSTEP at HELMEPA premises in Athens, Greece. The simulator purchased by HELMEPA included a NAUTIS DNV Class A FMB simulator with 240° horizontal field of view and an Instructor Station. Kongsberg Maritime has completed the delivery and installation of a suite of new bridge simulators for Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation. The new simulators at the Ministry of Transportation’s Maritime Training Centre, located at its headquarters in Jakarta, will be used for the assessment of Indonesian seafarers applying for seagoing certification, for local and international operations. KONGSBERG simulators will support the Ministry of Transportation to significantly reduce the time taken and the tools required to assess Indonesian seafarers. This is especially important in today’s context, as assessments for the certifications have become more stringent.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) announced the opening of its new mooring station training facility, designed to provide seafarers and cadets with experience of this crucial and potentially hazardous area of operations. A few months ago the Essar Group from India decided to buy back the shares from her daughter company Essar Ports Limited (EPL). Port of Antwerp International (PAI), the international consulting and investment subsidiary of Antwerp Port Authority, set up an alliance in 2012 with EPL, which was accompanied by an investment of 25 million euros, five million of which was contributed by the Flemish Regional Investment Company (FRIC). PAI and FRIC have come out of the existing financial arrangement with a capital gain of 6.8 million euros on top of their original investment, which has been recovered in full. In the meantime the collaboration with EPL will continue unabated in other areas.

In 2015, the number of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes (LHM) in the Americas continues to rise. Models from across the range have been delivered to various countries. The most sought-after LHM model in Latin America over the past five years, type LHM 600, is still in high demand. In Buenos Aires, Terminal 4 S.A. invested in an LHM 600. This new machine is based on a special design. An elongated tower extension ensures that the position of the tower cabin is higher than 37 metres. Besides better sight into the ship for the crane driver, one striking benefit is a higher fulcrum point which eases the handling of bigger vessels. All advantages come without any influence on safety or operational parameters like lifting capacity and travelling speed.

BSM reports 20% increase in the number of vessels under its management over the last year. The increase seen by BSM comes as no surprise against the backdrop of a fast growing economy that Cyprus has been demonstrating in recent times. Particularly over the last six months, the country has attracted many private equity firms and shipping companies, such as Ridgebury Tankers, who have set up presence here in Cyprus. Abu Dhabi Ports’ Maritime Training Centre looked back on what it called a successful year, noting a number “success stories” throughout 2014 as the number of trainees at the center increased by 15% in 2014 compared to 2013. A successful Maritime Resource Management (MRM) Facilitator training event concluded today in Makati City, Manila, Philippines as 22 participants from China, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore had gathered for the two-day event held at the European Training & Competence Center (ETCC) Inc. to be trained and certified as MRM Facilitators. Martin Hernqvist of ALL Academy, trainer at the event, said the event was a success thanks to the active participation from the attendees.

Hamburg - ETC, the MSG MarineServe GmbH operated ‘ECDIS Training Consortium,’ announced that it has reached agreement with the Sir Derek Bibby Maritime Training Center in Mumbai to act as its local partner. MSG will provide its well established ECDIS training course ware, ECDIS training systems and approved Train-the-Trainer courses. In addition, MSG will provide 24/7 certificate authentication and trainee database services for reference by its Partners, Customers, Port State Control and other concerned authorities. The Sir Derek Bibby Maritime Training Center will deliver the training, which is configured on a single training structure and methodology in order to guarantee the quality and consistency of the training.

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 15, 2011 – L-3 MPRI, a global provider of integrated training solutions, which includes simulation-based training systems, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced the installation of its Safe Cargo Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator (LCHS) in Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement’s (BSM) new Maritime Training Centre, which officially opened on Jan. 21, 2011 in Manila, Philippines. The simulator will be used to train and enhance the skills of personnel operating BSM’s extensive fleet of owned and managed liquid cargo vessels.

An Aberdeen-based company is behind the first freefall lifeboat-training centre to open for business in Australia. Survival Craft Inspectorate Ltd (Survival Craft) has collaborated with Australia’s Industrial Foundation for Accident Prevention (IFAP) to establish the new facility in Fremantle, which was formally opened by Western Australia premier Colin Barnett. A collaboration on advanced maritime training has been agreed on between Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC) and GL Academy. The Principal of AEMTC, Capt. K.N. Deboo, Dr Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd, K. Seal, Risk Manager of AEMTC, and Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff, Executive Vice President and Director Region Asia/Pacific with GL, signed the agreement. The first GL Academy course on "Ship Structures II" will be held in February. Further topics are scheduled for 2009. The cooperation marks the beginning of an extensive collaboration to work jointly on a post-graduate diploma course in naval architecture. Additionally, value-added seminars and workshops for the maritime industry will be provided.

BASS has signed an agreement with Indian Maritime Training Centre (IMTC). IMTC will train seafarers to familiarize themselves with the BASSware suite. BASS installed the planned maintenance software, Star IPS at IMTC in September last year. October 2001. To date, 110 participants have undergone the training. The program is divided into four modules, which are covered in three days. At the end of each module delivery, participants will complete the practical exercises based on relative day-to-day shipboard activities.
