Hawaii State Legislature Commends Pearl Harbor Shipyard Centennial
The Hawaii State Legislature honored Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY) for the first time March 18 with a House resolution and a Senate commendation lauding the Shipyard's 100 years of service to the Navy. PHNSY will hold its official 100-year anniversary celebration on May 13. PHNSY finds its roots in the 1800s, as the world's navies explored and established ports throughout the . Congress passed an Act officially creating Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, , in May of 1908 and authorized nearly $3 million to help build it. Rep. Lynn Finnegan sponsored the resolution, which was signed by all members of the Hawaii State House of Representatives. PHNSY Commander, Capt. Gregory Thomas and four other shipyard leaders were recognized on the House chamber floor.
Pearl Harbor Shipyard Earns OSHA VPP 'Star'
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gave final approval May 31 for Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard to participate as a "Star" in its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Star status is the highest rating attainable under the OSHA-run programs and recognizes organizations for excellence in health and safety in the workplace. The rate of employee injuries and illnesses at VPP sites are typically less than half the average of their respective industries. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is the only DoD organization to currently rate Star distinction within OSHA's Region IX, which encompasses California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa. OSHA's approval makes Pearl Harbor the fourth naval shipyard and the sixth DoD Star site in the nation.
Shipyard Management Class Bolsters Asia-Pacific Cooperation
Eleven naval officers from Bahrain, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Ireland, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand are attending the six-week course for international shipyard management at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY). The course, which began July 31, is designed to familiarize them with various management concepts about the efficient, economical and environmentally sound operation of a naval shipyard. But the course does more than simply prepare these officers: It also supports high-priority efforts to build alliances and cooperation through the Asia-Pacific region.
