The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered Guam Shipyard to obtain a stormwater discharge permit and to achieve compliance with the Clean Water Act for discharges of pollutants into Apra Harbor, Guam.“Ship repair facilities must have stormwater pollution controls to protect coastal ecosystems,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Mike Stoker. “This order will prevent pollution from reaching Apra Harbor.”Guam Shipyard operates a ship repair facility on Cabras Island in Piti, Guam. It has operated industrial activities, including boat repair, sandblasting, high pressure washing, painting and material storage since at least January 2016.EPA inspected the facility on September 2018 and found multiple violations of the Clean Water Act.

The founding of a new cabin factory is part of the MV WERFTEN Group’s extensive investment program at its Wismar site. MV WERFTEN Fertigmodule GmbH, part of the MV WERFTEN Group, officially took over its own cabin factory in Wismar. The facilities with a total area of 22,000 square meters will be used for manufacturing ship cabins for the cruise ships with delivery from 2020. Besides a modern production area of 8,700 square meters, the acquired premises have over 4,000 square meters of storage area.

The scope of work for each of the ships involved the dismantling of the existing crew-dedicated Windjammer, the assembly of the 17 new cabins, new corridors, and the electrical and piping works in line with the physical changes. "The team faced several technical and scheduling challenges with back-to-back projects that had practically overlapping timelines," explained Tommi Virta, Project Manager.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has increased its indoor material storage capacity by more than 500,000 square feet with the addition of new warehouse space in the West Park Warehouse Complex in Hampton. “The new warehouse not only provides Newport News Shipbuilding with increased storage capacity, but provides us room to execute several changes to our procurement and logistics strategies in an effort to reduce overall cost, increase material availability and better support our programs across the shipyard,” said Brian Fields, Newport News’ Vice President, Supply Chain Management. Additional storage capacity facilitates Newport News’ ability to buy parts and materials in bulk.

Sims Recycling Solutions, the world’s largest electronics recycler receives their Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) certification at their first facility in Roseville, CA. TAPA is an international Association that implements security standards for logistics pipelines in an effort to fight against cargo crime. On November 17, Mobile, Alabama-based Austal USA celebrated the grand opening of its new construction facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This event took place just 11 months to the day after breaking ground on the project on January 17, 2005. Several notable VIPs participated in the ceremony, including: State of Alabama Director of Development Neal Wade, Mobile County Commission President Mike Dean, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones, John Rothwell (Austal Ltd. Executive Chairman), Greg Metcalf (CEO, Austal USA), Tom Bender (CEO, Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc.) and Henry Seawell (CEO, Thompson Engineering, the company that was contracted for the design and construction of the expansion).

The Diplomatic Conference held (October 1-5, 2001) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London adopted the Draft Convention prepared by The Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO for the "Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems for Ships." The Convention has been developed to immediately ban the use of Tributyltin (TBT) globally in antifouling paints to "protect the marine environment". The ban on TBT has come about because TBT has detrimental effects on non-target marine organisms. In November 1999, IMO agreed that a Treaty be developed by the MEPC to ensure a ban on the application of TBT based antifouling paints by January 1, 2003, and a total ban on the use of TBT by January 1, 2008.

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the USCG specifying which agency will be responsible for certain aspects of oil and natural gas exploration, development, production, and transportation activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The MOU identifies 27 areas of responsibilities for both agencies. For example, MMS will be responsible for most drilling and production matters, pipeline operations, emergency shutdown systems, inspection and testing of production and drilling equipment, decommissioning platforms, and investigating oil pollution related to provisions in the OCS Lands Act.
