Mack Boring Promotes Ponnwitz to Lead New Sustainable Energy Division

Somerset, N.J. based Mack Boring & Parts Co. has promoted Christopher Ponnwitz to the role of Chief Commercial Officer of Mack Sustainable Energy, a new division for the company.“I am very happy to announce that Chris has moved into this new role, where he will be leading our efforts to further expand and grow the electric marine market, particularly with the ePropulsion product line,” said Patrick McGovern, President and CEO of Mack Boring. “Chris has been an exemplary leader for our company, and he’s a fast learner who has been working relentlessly to promote electric propulsion.

Mack Boring Announces the Passing of Ned McGovern III

Mack Boring & Parts Co., a supplier of engines and power products to industrial and marine markets, announced industry veteran Edward “Ned” McGovern III. Ned passed away on April 14, at the age of 77, following a seven-year battle with prostate cancer.In 1990, Ned became the third generation of McGovern leaders to become President of Mack Boring, and later Co-President with his brother Steve from 2003-2008. Ned, along with the McGovern family, transformed the company with the addition of products such as Yanmar, Isuzu and Scania.

River Services Integrated Into Northstar Marine

Northstar Marine, Inc. has finalized the integration of River Services (wholly owned by Northstar Marine, Inc.) a Philadelphia based marine service provider. River Services is now a new division of Northstar, and will operate as Northstar River Services.River Services was founded in 2013 to provide professional marine services in and around the Port of Philadelphia which includes launch, crew boat, and tug and barge operations.Phillip Risko, is the President and CEO of Northstar Marine, Inc., a marine services company that has been operating in the tri-state area since 1990.

The Federal Government’s 2020 Inland Impact

It is often difficult to push through the federal government morass to focus on the issues that actually matter to the inland operator. While 2020 inevitably will be a contentious year in American politics, it is critical to stay focused on the items that will have direct impact on the U.S. maritime industry. From a potential new Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) bill to potential Jones Act challenges, 2020 will be an important year for inland operators to stay politically engaged.Work on WRDAJanuary marked the beginning of Congress’ work in earnest toward introducing a new WRDA bill.

Maritime Challenges in the 116th Congress.The 116th Congress, with its now Democrat-controlled House and 110 newly-elected members, faces a choice. On one hand, Congress can continue to pursue the status quo, supporting U.S.-flag vessel operators and domestic port infrastructure development through existing programs, with suboptimal results. On the other, the 116th Congress can choose to be bold. It can recognize that the U.S.-flag fleet, with only 83 vessels operating in international trade, clearly requires new mechanisms of support.

Lloyd's of London: Agents Can Offer Iran Insurance for Oil Transport

The Lloyd's of London insurance market said on Tuesday that from a European Union perspective its managing agents can now provide insurance and reinsurance for the transportation of Iranian oil and petroleum products, following the lifting of sanctions. However it added that some restrictions on U.S. trade remain in place. "The U.S. has also lifted sanctions on Iran regarding the oil and shipping sectors, although principally this relief targets non-U.S. persons conducting business with Iran," Sean McGovern, Lloyd's chief risk officer, said in a market bulletin. "With a few exceptions, the general U.S. trade embargo on Iran remains in place and U.S.

The origin of the Mack Boring business name dates back to 1922 when Ed McGovern Sr. founded the company. His nickname was “Mack” and “boring” was one of his thriving machine shop specialties. The company is now under the fourth generation of uninterrupted McGovern family management. Blaney Joins Mack Boring Marine Transmission Center

Jim Blaney, formerly president of Aquadrive Systems, Inc., has joined Mack Boring & Parts Company of .  The announcement was made by Mack Boring Co-Presidents Ned and Steve McGovern. He will become business development manager for Aquadrive products at Mack Boring's .  Blaney introduced Aquadrive products to the marine market more than 25 years ago. Utilizing precision CV joints and thrust bearings, Aquadrive systems connect marine engines to any type of drive on most vessels. They reduce vibration and noise while eliminating alignment problems.  Many leading builders have used Aquadrive products for years, including Hinckley, Pearson, Fleming, , Hood, Caliber, J Boats and Zodiac.

Naval Reservists Assist in Water Taxi Rescue

Reservists from Naval Reserve Center (NRC) Baltimore assisted in the rescue of more than a dozen passengers from a water taxi that had capsized in Baltimore's Inner Harbor late in the afternoon of March 6. Two of the passengers died and three were still listed as missing, while the remaining 22 were rescued by Baltimore City Fire Department personnel, with the assistance of the NRC Baltimore Reservists. Command Master Chief Melvin Johnson and Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Edward Mendez witnessed the water taxi capsize as it attempted to maneuver in heavy winds and seas. They immediately called 911, and Cmdr. Petersen Decker, commanding officer of Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk, Det.

NY & NJ Holds Waterfront Conference

On May 15, the Municipal Waterfront Alliance sponsored its second port-wide waterfront conference focused on the legal, environmental, infrastructure, redevelopment, commercial, transportation and economic issues facing the Port of New York & New Jersey. The conference took place in the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey and the World Financial Center in New York City -- a short water taxi ride for the participants. The conference was attended by approximately 500 people, including 60 federal, state and local government representatives and stakeholders in the future redevelopment of the port complex. Carter Hall Conducts Coalition Operations in the Gulf of Aden

USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), Royal Fleet Auxiliary Fort Austin (A 386) and its embarked helicopter detachment 857th Royal Naval Air Squadron, and Federal German Ship Köln (F 211) are conducting maritime operations as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150. CTF 150 is responsible for maritime operations in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, North Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean. Through cooperation, these units drastically increase their individual capabilities. Flying two ASAC-7 Sea King helicopters, each equipped with the Searchwater 2000 radar, the aviators of the 857th are capable of locating and classifying contacts several hundred miles away. Between Carter Hall’s air assets and those of the 857th, the coalition partners have the ability to cover a much larger area with fewer ships.

Superior Energy Services Acquires Duffy & McGovern

Duffy & McGovern Accommodation Services has been acquired by US oilfield services firm Superior Energy Services Inc. The $47m deal sees Superior Energy Services continue its international expansion and complement its existing accommodation subsidiary HB Rentals, which is headquartered in Broussard, La. and provides accommodation and accessories to oil and gas companies in Oklahoma, Texas, the Rocky Mountains, Gulf of Mexico and Trinidad. As a result of the deal, Duffy & McGovern, which is headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland and whose staff and management team will all remain in position, will be investing some US$15 million (UK£7.6 million) with immediate effect to accelerate its fleet growth.

Hess LNG, USCG Analyze Use of Smaller Tankers

Hess LNG has agreed to give the U.S. Coast Guard more information on its plan to use smaller than anticipated tankers to deliver liquefied natural gas to its proposed Taunton River import terminal. In mid-March, the Coast Guard sent Hess LNG a letter detailing its concerns and seeking more information about the company’s plan to maneuver tankers 725 feet long and 82 feet wide under two Brightman Street bridges; the old bridge has a 98-foot-wide opening for boats. Hess LNG said the company will provide the Coast Guard with additional information and analysis including simulated modeling, information about tugs that would help maneuver the tankers…
