The Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group is one of the industry’s largest and most recognized shipbuilders, perhaps best known for its standardized, serial production workboats. Now with several dozen newbuild and repair yards on the map, the company has produced more than 6,000 vessels over its 90-year history—from harbor tugs and offshore supply ships, to ferries and patrol craft. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast is forming Contingency Engineering Response Teams (CERTs) in preparation of any damage to Naval facilities in the path of Hurricane Irma. "Teams returned last week from Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville and NAS Corpus Christi after performing damage assessments after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas," said Integrated Product Team Gulf Coast Assistant Operations Officer Cmdr. Anant Patel who is the CERT officer in charge. Just one week later, Patel is preparing several CERTs to be prepared after Hurricane Irma passes through Florida and moves up the east coast of the United States. "We need to be ready to move out early next week depending on where there may be damage on naval installations," said Patel.

Naval architect Ryan Rendall has joined the naval architecture, marine engineering and marine surveying firm The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI).   Prior to joining TSGI, Rendall worked for Metal Shark Boats as a naval architect and marine engineer. He received a B.S. in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers and the Marine Technology Society.

Dr Andrew Garrad, who retired from DNV GL on 23 December 2016, has been awarded a CBE – Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List. The CBE rewards contributions to the arts and sciences as well as work with charitable and welfare organisations. In 1984, Andrew co-founded Garrad Hassan (GH) in Bristol. It grew to become the world’s largest renewable energy consultancy, employing 1,000 people in 29 countries. He became President of GL Garrad Hassan after Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan merged in 2009. He ran the new company until 2012, when he became Chairman. After the merger of DNV and GL, Andrew became a member of the DNV GL – Energy Supervisory Board on the invitation of former Group President and CEO, Henrik Madsen.

Webb Institute has appointed Benjamin H. Scott as the Assistant Professor of Marine Engineering. Scott is a design engineer with over 30 years of experience in thermal and hydraulic analysis, heat exchanger design, thermal performance testing and fluid system design. Scott recently retired from Exelon Corporation as the senior manager of design engineering at their Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Md., where he oversaw a staff of 60 multidiscipline engineers responsible for all plant modifications and improvements…

Examining some questions regarding commercial autonomous and drone ships, as well as why VSAT currently presents the best solution for the communications and control of such vessels. The topic of autonomous shipping has been much in the news recently. We have seen, for example, the announcement in September 2015 that Inmarsat has begun participating in the Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA) recently launched by Rolls Royce. This initiative is designed to move autonomous shipping from the drawing board to a commercial reality.

Calnetix Technologies, LLC has published a White Paper describing new processes for producing supplemental power for a ship’s electrical load. The White Paper, entitled New-Technology Shipboard System Converts Heat from Engine Jacket Water into Electrical Power, is available for free download. Calnetix, working in close cooperation with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery and Engine Company (MHI-MME), has developed a system called Hydrocurrent, which uses an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) heat transfer process and a patented turbo-generator power system to convert thermal energy from heat in the engine’s jacket water into mechanical power to generate electricity.

Elkon (Istanbul), a subsidiary of Imtech Marine, has been awarded an interesting contract from Sedef Shipyard (Tuzla, Istanbul) for the delivery of the electrical equipment, propulsion system and services for two Canadian Seaspan hybrid ferries. The two, 148.9 m, dual-fuelled (diesel and liquefied natural gas) ferries are propelled by a hybrid-electrical propulsion system and can accommodate up to 59 trailers. These state-of-the-art ferries will replace aging vessels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, while ensuring the highest level of efficiency, performance and reliability.

Controls and Systems Engineer Chris Sellers will give a paper, co-authored by Director of Systems Engineering Parsa Mirmobin, entitled “Advanced Controls of Organic Rankine Cycle for Highly Transient Fluctuations during Initial Startup” in Session 9: Heat Exchangers, on Tuesday at 9:40 a.m. Development Engineer Errol Yuksek will deliver a paper on “Waste Heat Utilization of Main Propulsion Engine Jacket Water in Marine Application,” also co-authored by Mirmobin, in Session 13: Waste Heat Recovery from Engines II, on Tuesday at 3:20 p.m.

Coldharbour Marine, long recognised for the design, manufacture and supply of inert gas and fluid handling equipment vessels (FPSOs) has moved into a new 25k sq. ft. headquarters in Linby, Nottinghamshire. All of Coldharbour’s administration, design, research and development functions, its laboratory, factory acceptance test (FAT) rig, stores and warehousing together with its high-tech factory and assembly shop will all now be under one roof. Coldharbour Marine is in the final stages of accreditation for a patent protected , inert gas driven, in-tank, ballast water treatment system (BWMS). The projected international demand for this product underpins the company’s current ambitious recruitment plans.
