Eleven individuals and organizations have been named as winners of the 2014 Walter B. Jones Memorial Awards for Excellence in Coastal Ocean Resource Management, an award given by NOAA’sOffice for Coastal Management for exemplary leadership and a commitment to balancing the human use of coastal and ocean resources with the needs of the environment. These national awards, given every two years, honor individuals and organizations that have dedicated countless hours to conserve, protect, and improve the U.S. coasts. The Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced its 2014 board of trustees. Consisting of 117members, the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Trustees and Directors oversees management of the organization and helps to provide resources to advance the Foundation’s mission to support the service of men and women in the United States Coast Guard. SCI awarded three honorees at the River Bell Awards Luncheon on December 9, 2010. Stephen Little of Crounse Corporation (River Bell Award), Buck Lay (River Legend Award), and the Rev. James Wilkinson formerly of SCI (Distinguished Service Award). In December, the inland waterways industry impressed SCI fundraisers with sponsorship dollars surpassing the budget aim for the Seamen’s Church Institute’s (SCI) River Bell Awards Luncheon, an annual event held in Paducah, KY recognizing contributions of an individual, company, or organization to the inland maritime industry. Income from the awards luncheon, which supports SCI’s Ministry on the River, the nation’s only full-time pastoral care ministry on the Ohio and Lower Mississippi River systems, soared close to $180K.

The Federal Maritime Commission announced that Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye has assumed her duties at the Commission. Dye was nominated by President Bush to serve the remainder of a 5-year term expiring June 30, 2005. She was sworn-in by former Chairman and current Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao on December 19, 2002. Dye comes to the Commission with an extensive background in maritime matters. For the past 15 years, she served as a Committee Counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives. Between 1995 and 2002, she served as Counsel to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; from 1987 to 1995, she served as Minority Counsel for the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee.
