Jamaica Reelected to the IMO Council
In a fiercely contested election during the 28th IMO Assembly, Jamaica was successful in securing a seat in the most sought-after Category ‘C’ of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2014-2015 biennium. The Jamaican delegation was led by The Hon. Dr. Morais Guy, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, and attended by Admiral Peter Brady, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), and senior officers of the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) and the MAJ.
De Vries State Harbour Master of Rotterdam
René de Vries has been appointed (State) Harbour Master of Rotterdam, taking office on 1 March 2010. That is the date on which the current Harbour Master Jaap Lems retires. The port of Rotterdam is not unknown territory for De Vries. He began his career with the Port Authority in 1982, as crew member on one of the patrol vessels. Through the years, he has progressed to his present position, as manager of the Traffic Planning & Operations department, which has 220 staff. The (State) Harbour Master is responsible for the fast, safe and clean handling of shipping traffic in the port of Rotterdam.
Tanker Company Fined $4.9M
Repeat offender, Ionia Management, a Greek company that manages a fleet of tanker vessels, was sentenced in New Haven, Conn., for its role in falsifying records to conceal the overboard dumping of waste oil from the M/T Kriton into international waters and its efforts to impede the investigation of the U.S. Coast Guard, announced Ronald J. Tenpas, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, Kevin J. O’Connor, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Rear Admiral Tim Sullivan, Commander of the First Coast Guard District, U.S. Coast Guard. U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton for the District of Connecticut fined Ionia Management $4.9 million and appointed a Special Master to oversee the company’s record keeping.
Singapore and the Netherlands Sign MOU
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Directorate-General for Freight Transport (DGFT) of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. The MOU was signed by Mr Chen Tze Penn, Director-General, MPA and his Dutch counterpart, Mrs Jacqueline Tammenoms Bakker, Director-General, DGFT. The signing ceremony took place on 9 Jul 02 at the headquarters of the DGFT at the Hague, Netherlands. This MOU follows on the Letter of Intent on maritime co-operation signed between Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong and the Dutch Minister of Transport, Tineke Netelenbos in 2000.
‘The Cat’ Starts Trinidad to Tobago Service
Incat Australia announced that the fast ferry, ‘The Cat’, has been Time Chartered by Bay Ferries of Canada to the Port Authority of Trinidad & Tobago. ‘The Cat’, which operates on the 85 nautical mile route between Port of Spain and Scarborough, entered commercial service on January 10, 2005.
