Dutch shipbuilding conglomerate Damen Shipyards Group announced it has signed a contract with BOA Group for two ASD Tugs 3010 ICE. VIKING Norsafe Life-saving Equipment HELLAS has secured orders from Greece’s Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy to deliver 31 patrol boats and three high-speed boats to the Hellenic Coast Guard. The orders, covered in three separate contracts with the VIKING Life-saving Equipment subsidiary, are part of an EU-backed Hellenic Coast Guard procurement program which was initiated four years ago.Two of the contracts cover 31 boats based on VIKING Norsafe’s proven Munin S1200 hull form, with the design adapted to meet client requirements.

Offshore safety equipment provider VIKING has said it has won a contract with FPSO supplier BW Offshore to deliver has selected VIKING Norsafe free-fall lifeboats, daughter craft, and davits for a large FPSO project which will operate off northern Australia.While VIKING did not share the exact name of the FPSO project, this is most likely the Barossa FPSO BW Offshore is building for deployment at Santos' Barossa project.The safety equipment provider said that the primary means of evacuation from the FPSO will be three VIKING Norsafe GES-50 Mk.

Norsafe has carried out extensive research and development in the last few years to develop a new range of robust and safe boats for the Military and Professional market. Using the experience gained from the closed cabin 1200 and S1200 in the Munin range, an open version is now ready for sea trials and will be launched at Seawork International on July 3-5 in Southampton, UK. The latest boat has already been tested by Norsafe’s engineers together with user groups representing the coast guard, maritime police, customs and special forces. The overall feedback has been very positive.

Marine seismic survey provider SeaBird Exploration has entered into a settlement agreement with Ordinat Shipping AS, the owners of Munin Explorer, for the termination of the charter party agreement and redelivery of the vessel. The transaction is conditional on the fulfilment of certain preconditions and is expected to be approximately cash neutral to the company in 2018 and 2019. The company is estimating that the transaction will save in excess of $2 million over the term of the contract, including the forgiveness of the $2.4 million charter hire payment due 30 June 2020. The settlement agreement provides for a three year non-competition restriction whereby the vessel cannot compete in the company's markets.

Many believe that masterless ships may become reality within a very short period of time. Surely, the technology for unmanned ships is coming, yet it remains unknown exactly where, when and to what extent. Now, the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), together with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking the answers for these unknowns by launching a prestudy on autonomous ships. DMA said the purpose of its cooperation with the DTU is, firstly, to increase the common knowledge base and to set the preliminary frames so that the development and use of unmanned ships can come about in an appropriate manner. Following on it success in the military and professional sector, Norsafe said it will exhibit at Euronaval in Paris Le Bourget, from October 17-21, 2016. “Our business in the military sector is growing year on year and we want to capitalize on this so by exhibiting at Euronaval we can showcase our quality range to buyers from around the world,” said Øystein Schultz Sandberg, Vice President of Sales at Norsafe. On display will be a model of the Munin S1200, Norsafe’s high speed patrol boat.

The guideline enables shipowners and managers to demonstrate that their vessel is laid up in a responsible manner, taking into account noise, emission and environmental concerns, while fulfilling all safety requirements. Drones do it and spacecraft have too, for many years. Recently, also, automobile makers and small boat makers have introduced their first autonomous vehicles on the streets, and waterways. Unmanned vessels on the ocean is no longer a dream – it is a reality. And according to those in the know, the reality will really start to come to fruition in the coming decaded. The MUNIN project (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks) is investigating potential concepts for a fully or partially unmanned merchant vessel. The case ship is a dry bulk carrier of handymax size, operating on routes between Europe and South America in the beginning.

Experts from the maritime industry met on the M/S Pearl Seaways from January 28-30 for the e-Navigation Underway 2014 international conference. One topic of the talks and discussions was unmanned shipping, which Fraunhofer CML is examining and advancing as part of the research project MUNIN (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks). e-navigation – in other words the collection, analysis and exchange of maritime information both on land and at sea – was the main subject of talk on the M/S Pearl Seaways and discussed by the maritime experts on various levels.

SeaBird Exploration Limited said that the conversion of Munin Explorer to a 2D/Source vessel is complete and she has successfully completed her sea-trials in Egersund. It will immediately start as a source vessel in the North Sea for the remaining part of the summer season. It departed the shipyard yesterday. Delivery of the Harrier Explorer is pushed back a few weeks with delivery expected later this month.

Norsafe AS reported exceptional bollard pull and low speed thrust using twin UltraJet 305HT waterjets coupled to twin Yanmar 340 bhp 6LYA-STP engines. The survey boat Munin is designed and tested according to the "Nordic boat standard" for workboats. During sea trials a speed of 30 knots with a displacement of 8 tonnes was comfortably achieved and a bollard pull of 2.8 tonne was recorded. According to Norsafe, the workboat has excellent reliability, maneuverability, and sea keeping abilities, making it suitable as a work platform for maintenance on seismic cables. In addition, Munin is designed to operate away from the Mother Ship for extended periods, with a sufficient range for long time operation. The boat is equipped with a spacious wheelhouse with seating for a crew of four.
