Poland's World Maritime Day Parallel Event

How to create better shipping for a better future was a theme running throughout the 2018 IMO World Maritime Day Parallel Event (13-15 June), held in Szczecin, Poland. “IMO's heritage for 70 years has been to drive improvements in shipping to achieve a better world today. But we cannot rest on past achievements. Our challenge for the years to come remains the same: to create better shipping - for a better future,” said IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, in his keynote address. Oz, NZ ships Seize $700 mi in Narcotics

Maritime security operations by Australian and New Zealand frigates operating in the Middle East region during the past six weeks have seized almost a tonne of narcotics worth an estimated street value of $711 million. Royal Australian Navy Guided Missile Frigate, HMAS Newcastle netted 724kg of narcotics worth an estimated $597 million. During the same operation, New Zealand ship HMNZS Te Kaha seized 257kg of narcotics worth an estimated $214 million. Patrolling as part of the Combined Maritime Forces, Combined Task Force -150, HMAS Newcastle’s Commanding Officer, Commander Dominic MacNamara said narcotics seizures denied a key source of funding to terrorist organisations.

Kalaat Beni-Abbes Delivered at Muggiano Shipyard

The delivery ceremony of new amphibious vessel for the Algerian Navy  was held today at the Muggiano shipyard (in La Spezia). The "Kalaat Beni-Abbes" (from the name of a place in the north of the country, which in Arabic means fort of the sons of Abbes), a vessel commissioned in 2011 by the Ministry of Defence of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria from Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a company controlled by Fincantieri in which Selex ES also holds an interest, will serve as the national Navy's new flagship. Shipbuilder Observes Market Turndown, Turns Profit

Annual financial statement showed Fincantieri closed last year's accounts with approximately euro 2.4 billion in annual revenues, of which more than 80% for the export market, and over euro 1.8 billion in new orders acquired during the year. After two years of significant non-recurring expenses, the 2011 financial year is closing with a net profit of more than euro 10 million, EBITDA of euro 138 million and a net surplus of euro 166 million in cash over debt (net financial position), allowing Fincantieri to carry on its business without any significant financial pressure.
