London based P&I club Britannia said it has finalized plans to open its Greek office in Piraeus as part of an ongoing expansion of the club’s regional hub network.The Greek office will be headed by David Harley who recently returned to the London office having established and worked for over five years as head of Britannia, Hong Kong. Harley will be assisted by newly appointed Konstantinos Samaritis, who joins from a Greek shipowner, having previously worked for both Standard and Skuld Clubs’ Greek operations.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) fuel rules entering force in 2020 mandate a drastic sulfur reduction. By 2050 the mandate is to cut greenhouse gas emissions of shipping by at least 50 percent.Marine fuels, lubricants and additives manufacturers play their part in establishing maritime’s green credentials by introducing new environmentally acceptable technologies and products.The shipping industry is more than ever portrayed in a bad light due to increasing awareness of its contribution to global climate change, according to Dirk Kronmeijer, CEO of GoodFuels Marine.

Shell Marine has launched a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil, Shell Alexia 140, now available from the ports of Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanjung Pelepas, Busan and Salalah. The launch follows receipt of a No Objection Letter (NOL) for commercial use of Shell Alexia 140 from MAN Diesel & Turbo and coincides with Shell Alexia 140’s acceptance into full scale operations by two major customers. In September 2016, Shell Marine disclosed Alexia 140’s selection as the first test oil for ‘ACOM’ - MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing process.

The 2016 SHIPPINGInsight Award was presented to Eagle Bulk Shipping, and its technology partners Veson Nautical and Accuritas Global Solutions, at the SHIPPINGInsight 2016 Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition in Stamford, Conn. The award is presented annually to honor a shipping company and its technology partners for the successful implementation of an innovative technology or initiative that advanced the state of the art in fleet optimization. The award winners each received a binnacled captain’s clock in a polished wooden case as well as framed certificates. Eagle Bulk Shipping was recognized for a performance profile modeling project that provided an optimal way to determine the speeds and consumptions guaranteed in the company’s time charter parties.

AkzoNobel’s pioneering methodology for rewarding ship owners who use sustainable hull coatings has been named Environmental Leader Product of the Year for 2016. The award recognizes the introduction of the shipping industry’s first carbon credits methodology, which was developed by the company’s Marine Coatings business. Launched in 2014 in conjunction with The Gold Standard Foundation and Fremco Group, the scheme is based on ship owners converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium, biocide-free hull coating such as Intersleek®, part of AkzoNobel’s International® range of marine coatings. The methodology financially rewards ship owners for using sustainable hull coatings that improve operational efficiencies and reduce emissions.

Neda Maritime Agency, a  Greek tanker and bulker owner, has reportedly become the world’s first ship owner to be awarded carbon credits through a methodology developed by AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings business. A total of 13,375 carbon credits, potentially worth around $60,000, have been presented to Neda Maritime via the program. Launched in 2014, it is reported to be the first scheme of its kind that financially rewards ship owners for using sustainable hull coatings that improve operational efficiencies and reduce emissions.

Verifavia, the world’s leading emissions verification company for the transport sector, has been tasked by five shipping companies with performing a pre-verification gap analysis against the European Commission’s (EC) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) rules. DFDS Seaways, Euronav Ship Management, NEDA Maritime Agency, Seaspan Ship Management and Synergy Maritime, have all appointed Verifavia to assess their organisations for MRV readiness. MRV Regulation 2015/757 came into force on 1st July 2015 and is viewed as a first step towards cutting CO2 emissions from maritime transport in the European Union (EU). South Korea, Japan and China shipyards update their order books with a clean haul of ocean-going newbuilding contracts, detailed as follows in the latest Clarkson Hellas S&P Weekly Bulletin. Clarkson Hellas report a few orders in dry, starting with the American fund Doonbeg Group ordering four firm plus four option 64,000 DWT Ultramax at Zhejiang Yangfan in China for delivery in 2015 and 2016 for the firm vessels. (This order is understood to have been signed last month, although it came to light this week). Another order which came to light this week was from Clients of Neda Maritime contracting four firm 82,000 DWT Kamsarmax with Tsuneishi Zhoushan at the end of last year. Delivery of the vessels will be within the 2nd half of 2016.

Neda Maritime achieves ISO 50001 certification to join an elite group of tanker owners who are managing their energy use more effectively. After months of close work with Lloyd’s Register, Greek shipowner gains international standard. The Piraeus-based Neda Maritime Agency Co. Ltd has joined an elite group of ship operators who have certified their systems and processes against the ISO 50001 standard, demonstrating the employment of best practice for efficient energy use and conservation throughout their fleet.
