The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers has officially welcomed its new senior officers at a Controlling Council meeting held in Athens, Greece.Taking over from Glenn Murphy as International Chair of the Institute is Luis Bernat. Prior to his election as Chair, Bernat has held the position of Vice Chair since 2021. He brings to the role extensive experience gained over almost 50 years in the industry. Dutch dredging, marine and offshore services company Van Oord said it has signed partnership agreements with LexX and Heliorec, two start-ups scouted through the innovation platform PortXL. The signing ceremony took place during the shakedown event on December 2 marking the end of this year's PortXL program.Van Oord is one of the founders of PortXL and a main sponsor of the PortXL program for the sixth year in a row. Interferry has unveiled a strategic plan promising to put safety issues at the heart of its work as the voice of the worldwide ferry industry. The pledge came at the global trade association’s 41st annual conference in Manila – a venue chosen to spotlight the challenges of domestic ferry safety in developing nations. According to Interferry, the plan signals its overriding ambition to help lift ferry safety in all parts of the world to the very high standard already in place in North America and Europe, where casualties in recent decades have been extremely rare.

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten said it will chair a panel on modern shipbuilding at this year’s SNAME Maritime Convention (SMC) in Bellevue, Wash. The panel will discuss new technologies in shipbuilding, how to address an aging workforce, new approaches to training, and nontraditional design deliverables. “We’re excited to bring attention to this critical topic at SMC this year,” said Josh Horst, PE, Glosten’s Manager of Production Services and SMC Panel Chair. “Shipbuilding is vital to Seattle’s economy, and advances in technology are changing the approach to traditional practices. As designers, we have a responsibility to critically evaluate these advancements, and collaborate with shipyards to implement them.

Inmarsat has announced plans in support of its diamond sponsor commitment for London International Shipping Week, 11-15 September 2017 (LISW17) by staging three key events focusing on the maritime industry’s digital future. To coincide with the official launch of LISW17 on October 19th 2016, Inmarsat announced that its separate events would target: shipping’s response to digital disruption; the future of maritime safety; and maritime cyber security myth-busting. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is hosting a Security Seminar in London on Thursday, November 10, which will focus on human factors in modern maritime security. We wish we had a dollar for every time we heard or read the words Big Data at the Nor-Shipping exhibition last month. We might even have collected enough cash to buy a round of expensive Norwegian beers for the gang at the Fridtjof bar. Seriously, Big Data is one of the most talked-about subjects at maritime industry gatherings. At Nor-Shipping there were no fewer than half a dozen panels and conference sessions focusing on the role of Big Data and analytics in commercial shipping.
