Markey Machine Hires Atkinson as Business Development VP

Scott R. Atkinson has joined winch and deck machinery manufacturer Markey Machine as vice president of business development. Atkinson’s previous business development roles were at the former Rapp Hydema (now part of MacGregor), AdvanTec Marine and Arctic Storm, as well as through his consulting firm, Jaeger Marine. Report: EU to Toughen Sanctions on Turkish Offshore Drilling in Contested Waters

The European Union will impose sanctions on more Turkish individuals and companies responsible for drilling in contested waters in the Mediterranean, according to a draft statement prepared for EU leaders to agree at a summit on Thursday.If agreed, the EU will “prepare additional listings” on the basis of a sanctions list already in place since 2019 and “if need be work on the extension” of its scope, according to the draft statement seen by Reuters.Negotiations over the two-page statement are still ongoing and Greece and Cyprus, which accuse Turkey of drilling for hydrocarbons off its continental shelf, believe the sanctions do not go far enough, according to diplomats briefed on internal discussions.EU leaders are considering whether to make good on a threat made in October to sanction T

Turkey to Launch Second Cyprus Drill Ship

Turkey will launch a second drilling vessel on Thursday that will begin natural gas operations near Cyprus at the beginning of July, Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez was quoted as saying on Tuesday.Turkey and the internationally recognized Cypriot government have overlapping claims of jurisdiction for offshore oil and gas research in that part of the Mediterranean, an area thought to be rich in natural gas.Ankara already has a ship, called Fatih, in the region. Turkish Ship to Continue Explorations in Mediterranean

Turkish Navy Stops Greek Frigate 'Harassment' in Mediterranean

Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency said on Thursday that the navy had stopped a Greek frigate from harassing a Turkish ship in the Mediterranean. GE Opens Global R&D Center in Brazil

General Electric today announced the opening of the $500 million Brazil Technology Center that will focus on developing advanced subsea oil and gas technology. The center, GE’s first in Latin America, will be a hub for engagement and collaboration with GE’s customers in the region and is expected to employ 400 researchers in the future. In the twentieth century, one of mankind’s greatest feats was successfully landing on the moon more than 235,000 miles from earth. In the 21st century, mankind’s greatest feat may well be securing the  world’s energy future for the next few centuries. Subsea engineers often say that it is actually more difficult to put a machine 10,000 feet under the sea than send a rocket to the moon.

Aker Solutions Appoints Head of Industry & Investor Relations

Aker Solutions says it has recruited David Phillips from HSBC Global Equity Research as head of industry and investor relations. He will start on June 17, 2014. Phillips, 43, served as global co-head of oil and gas research and managing director at HSBC since mid-2011 after joining the bank as an analyst in 2005. He earlier specialized as an analyst covering the chemicals sector for banks including Commerzbank, Morgan Stanley and Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. He will be based at Aker Solutions' London office and report to the company's chief financial officer. David Phillips has a BA in Chemistry from Oxford University and a PhD in Chemistry from Cambridge University. www.akersolutions.com
