The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a worker missing from an oil production platform in Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain that exploded and caught fire late on Sunday. Missing is Timothy Morrison, 44, of Katy, Texas, the Coast Guard said in a statement. Seven other workers were sent to hospital with injuries in the incident. "The decision to suspend a search is never an easy one," Commander Zac Ford said in the statement. Coast Guard rescue crews battled 4 foot to 5 foot (1.2 meter to 1.5 meter) waves during the search, and a helicopter joined them at daybreak after overnight efforts failed to locate Morrison, officials said at a briefing on Monday.

Samsung Heavy Industries, South Korea's major shipyard, build a floating production unit for British oil multinational BP that will be used in offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, says a report in Yonhap. The 1.5 trillion won ($1.26 billion) contract is the first for a floating oil production platform to be received by any of South Korea's big three shipbuilders in 18 months, according to Samsung Heavy. Under the deal with BP Plc, Samsung Heavy will build a floating production unit (FPU) by August 2020. The semi-submersible platform will be used for BP’s field development project, called ‘Mad Dog II,” in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Production began in the Mad Dog oil field in 2005.

The U.S. Coast Guard said an oil production platform has caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 80 miles southwest of Grand Isle, La. The fire, which broke out aboard the Ship Shoal 266 A oil production platform at approximately 2:30 a.m. Thursday, was reported to have been full extinguished by approximately 5:50 a.m., according to the rig’s owner Renaissance Offshore. Cancelled order part of Statoil's Bressay project. South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd on Friday said a 1.58 trillion won ($1.41 billion) order placed in 2013 for a fixed oil production platform has been cancelled. The shipbuilder said in a regulatory filing that the cancellation would have no effect on its balance sheet as no costs had been incurred. A company spokesman also said the order had not been factored into any earnings forecasts. Daewoo Shipbuilding said a European company placed the order and had cancelled due to deterioration in its global operating environment. The cancelled order was an option in a contract signed with Norway's Statoil ASA as part of the Bressay oil development project on Britain's continental shelf…

Kongsberg Maritime has completed the installation and commissioning of an integrated bridge and automation solution during a large-scale retrofit of the Saipem 7000, an advanced Semi-submersible crane and pipelaying (J-lay) DP3 vessel. Coast Guard search continues for missing personnel following blaze on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico The fire on a shallow-water drilling oil production platform began while workers were using a torch to cut an oil line, reports Associated Press, and was brought under control within hours. Eleven people were taken by helicopter to area hospitals or for treatment on shore by emergency medical workers. A request for assistance from a Japanese-owned merchant vessel in the Somali Basin led to Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) warship USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) securing the release of the vessel and its 24 crew members from four suspected pirates, Mar. The past decade was a tough one for the Canadian shipbuilding market. It was a decade that produced a decline of both employment and decline of newbuilds, many of which were contracted in the late 1980s still awaiting construction. This unfinished business was concentrated mostly on various military projects that had been thought out but were never actually followed through. It is estimated that by the time the 1990's came to a close that Canadian yards had experienced the worst decade since postwar times with total sales declining by about 50 percent since 1991. In addition, total employment in the industry has broken off by about 50 percent from 12,000 workers in 1990 to today's figure of 5,000.

Imtech has received an order worth $25.6m for an important part of the technology on board a high-tech floating oil-production platform to be made operational in the North Sea. A pair of 70,000 dwt double-acting ice-class shuttle tankers ordered at Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg for year-round service between the Pechora Sea and Murmansk are to be dually classed by Lloyd’s Register and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS). Sevmorneftegaz (wholly owned by Gazprom), Sovcomflot and Admiralty Shipyards have signed a trilateral contract for the building of the two Arctic shuttle tankers. The vessels will transport oil from the Prirazlomnoye oil field in the Pechora Sea and are due for delivery in 2008. The principles of co-operation for dual classification by Lloyd’s Register and RS were formally agreed between the two societies at RS’ St Petersburg headquarters earlier this year.

Aker Arctic Technology of Finland and the St. Petersburg based FSUE Admiralty shipyards signed a contract for a license and design including classification package of two 70,000 dwt double-acting Arctic shuttle tankers, which the yard is building for ZAO Sevmorneftegaz for the Prirazlomnoye oil field in the Arctic Ocean. The ships are the largest tankers so far built by the yard and will be delivered towards the end of 2007 and respectively 2008. The tankers are capable for worldwide operations, but they are specifically intended to operate independently between the offshore oil production platform and a transhipment terminal in Murmansk area.
