Commander, Naval Air Forces, Pacific announced Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as the recipient of the 2016 Battle "E" award for aircraft carriers home-ported in the Pacific, March 28. The Commander, Naval Air Forces Carrier Battle Efficiency (Battle "E") competition is held annually to recognize the best performing east and west coast aircraft carriers and award them for demonstrating superior performance and readiness. At a meeting of the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), it was recognised that ships may also be exposed to so-called cyber-attacks. Now, the IMO wants to prevent hostile attempts to interfere with electronic systems in the maritime industry and it has therefore drawn up interim Guidelines on risk management. An important point of the guidelines is that potential attacks will not be aimed merely at traditional computer systems, but will also to a high degree focus on control and steering systems for, for example, navigation, machinery, communication, etc. The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has recognised that ships can also be exposed to hostile attempts to disturb or interfere with electronic systems, so-called cyber-attacks.

Military Sealift Command’s dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Lewis and Clark won the 2008 Department of the Navy safety excellence award in the Military Sealift Command category, Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group conducted a port visit to Rota after conducting maritime operations in support of the global war on terrorism. U.S. The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) and elements of the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) successfully entered the U.S. 2nd Fleet area of operations (AOO) on June 26, as the group sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean. Bataan ESG stayed busy in the 6th Fleet AOO for approximately three weeks before making the trip toward home. As the flagship of the ESG, Bataan accomplished both internal unit level goals and assignments from the fleet commander during that time.

In preparation for Talisman Saber 2007 (TS07), Sailors and embarked Marines aboard USS Juneau (LPD 10) are learning environmental protection measures to safely preserve Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The main operating area for the exercise -- which will bring together nearly 32,000 U.S.-Australian forces for training -- is in Shoalwater Bay Training Area. The 1,000 square mile area near the Barrier Reef has a high environmental value. The area is administered by the Australian Army to ensure sound environmental practices are observed.

Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) established Expeditionary Training Command (ETC) in a ceremony held at Drexler Manor on Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek April 13. The new ETC’s main function will be to deploy teams to foreign countries to train their militaries in such areas as port security, non-commissioned officer (NCO) professional development, control craft operation, maintenance management and operational risk management. According to Lt. Cmdr. Scott Chafian, ETC executive officer, the new command will assess what partner countries and allies need in terms of maritime security training, construction and explosive ordnance disposal — any of the disciplines that NECC encompasses. “We will develop training programs to meet those needs," Chafian said.

The Naval Safety Center reported, Dec. 27, that the Navy has exceeded its targeted limit of 29 mishaps for the entire fiscal year (FY)—a critical statistic because nine months remain in the fiscal year. Two PMV mishaps late last week put the Navy over the number that would have allowed it to stay on track to reduce mishaps 75 percent by FY '08. “We are shocked at the numbers,” said Capt. Bill Glenn, Director of Shore Safety Programs at the Naval Safety Center. “A lot of dedicated people around the fleet have done an enormous amount of work to prevent traffic-related mishaps and deaths. Fiscal year 2006 started off poorly with a series of motorcycle and PMV mishaps in October. After a short decline, mishaps continued their climb to the highest limit in 17 years.

Moore Stephens have warned companies engaged in the insurance industry that they must put in place formal, anti-fraud structures, or risk being targeted both externally and internally. Writing in the firm’s Insured Interest newsletter, Moore Stephens’ Alan Tidy says, “There is evidence to suggest that there are potential gaps in the systems that the insurance industry has put in place to detect and eliminate fraud. “Historically, exposure to fraud in the insurance industry has been regarded as a comparatively low-level risk, and one most closely associated with claims. But today, with the massive growth in internet business, the risk can no longer be considered peripheral.

The Center for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving (CENEODDIVE) has established a new learning site at Training Support Center (TSC), Great Lakes, Ill., where the first class commenced Oct. 19 with a group of 18 EOD students. The new site was created to conduct preparatory training for Navy Diver (ND) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel emerging from Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes. Traditionally, an ND or EOD Sailor would receive training at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC) in Panama City, Fla., following boot camp at RTC.
