BHP Mulls LNG-Fueled Bulker Freight

Melbourne-headquartered resource company BHP wants to introduce LNG-fuelled iron ore vessels, which could transport up to 10 per cent of its product in the coming years."In July this year, we released the world’s first bulk carrier tender for LNG-fuelled transport for up to 27 million tonnes of iron ore," said Sundeep Singh, Group Procurement Officer.He said that introducing LNG-fuelled ships into BHP’s maritime supply chain will eliminate NOx (nitrogen oxide) and SOx (sulfur oxide) emissions and significantly reduce CO2 emissions along the busiest bulk transport route globally.BHP says it has a responsibility to address emissions, as the biggest producer of coking coal and a major shipper of iron ore.

Spring Cargo Numbers Buoy Great Lakes-Seaway Shipping

Spring cargo numbers from the St. Lawrence Seaway and U.S. ports are signaling a better year for Great Lakes-Seaway shipping. According to the latest figures from the St. Lawrence Seaway, total cargo shipments via the Seaway from the start of the shipping season (March 20 through April 30) reached 3.7 million metric tons, up 8 percent from the same period a year ago. “It’s still very early in the season, but we’re optimistic that 2017 will be a better year for Great Lakes-Seaway shipping,” said Bruce Burrows, President of the Chamber of Marine Commerce. “U.S.

Baltic Index Streaks to Highest Level since 2014

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, continued its gaining streak on Tuesday with a fresh more-than-two-year high, driven by strong demand for large iron ore vessels. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was up 51 points, or 4 percent, at 1,333 points, its highest level since November 11, 2014. The capesize index climbed 145 points, or 5.5 percent, to 2,765 points, its best since November 25, 2014.

Hong Kong Shipping Group Wants Aid to Arrested Ship's Crew

The Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) on Thursday called on the city's authorities to provide assistance to the crew of a Hong Kong-flagged coal ship off the east coast of Australia that is running out of food and fuel. Local Australian media and Great Britain's Guardian newspaper reported this week that the Five Stars Fujian, a 180,000 deadweight tonne capsesize class coal carrier, has been sitting in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef for the past month with supplies diminishing and salaries going unpaid. The HKSOA said in a statement that the ship was under detention by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), off the port of Gladstone, for breaches of the Maritime Labour Convention relating to lack of provisions and unpaid wages.

On Friday , August 16, all attention will focus on the first visit of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. With a capacity of 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot containers), a length of 399 meters and a width of 59 metres, this vessel is by far the largest container ship in the world. At that moment, a few other massive ships will be present in the port. The Ti Europe will be moored at Dolphins 80 in the Calandkanaal.

Herculean Ships Gather in Port of Rotterdam

The largest vessels in the world will be moored in the port of Rotterdam in the next 7 days, thanks to the port's deep-draft facilities. On Friday 16 August, all attention will focus on the first visit of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. With a capacity of 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot containers), a length of 399 metres and a width of 59 metres, this vessel is by far the largest container ship in the world. The Ti Europe will be moored at Dolphins 80 in the Calandkanaal. With a length of 380 metres and width of 69 metres, this white tanker is the largest oil tanker in the world still in operation (420,000 dwt). In addition, the Vale Rio is expected at EMO in the Mississippihaven. This ship, the largest iron ore vessel in the world, measures 362 metres by 65 metres.

Ship Finance International Limited (NYSE: SFL) refers to the announcement of the fourth quarter 2008 dividend payable in cash or, at the shareholders request, in newly issued common shares on or about April 17, 2009. Shareholders beneficially owning approximately 55% of our outstanding shares have elected to receive 0.0528 common shares for each share held, and approximately 2.1 million new common shares will be issued as a result of such elections.
