Diesel and Engine Oil Removed from Sunken Tug in California

Petroleum product and hazardous material have been removed from a 1940s era military tugboat that sunk in California, the U.S. Coast Guard said.A Unified Command and its contractors completed lightering efforts from the tug Mazapeta, Wednesday.The Mazapeta sunk September 4, 2023, in Little Potato Slough within the San Joaquin Delta, northwest of Stockton, with approximately 1,600 gallons of diesel and engine oil reported to be onboard at the time of the incident.Quantification of recovered product is ongoing…

Fishing Vessel Runs Aground near Santa Cruz

Responders are working to remove fuel from the tanks of a 56-foot commercial fishing vessel that ran aground near California’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary on Sunday.The grounded vessel, Pacific Quest, is broken up and beached near Seymour Marine Discovery Center in Santa Cruz., with a maximum potential capacity of 1,200 gallons of diesel on board, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.The captain of the fishing vessel contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, reporting that his vessel ran aground with only himself and his dog aboard.

SGS Wet Welding Repairs Approved by DNV GL

DNV GL and Subsea Global Solutions LLC (SGS) say that they have completed an extensive joint research and development program, that will allow permanent repairs to be carried out by underwater wet welding on certain areas of vessels. Subsea Global Solutions’ global network of coded welder divers will be available to perform these permanent repairs on a case by case basis utilizing this procedure in suitable locations throughout the world in accordance with the approvals given by DNV GL. Over the last two and a half years, Subsea Global Solutions welded in excess of 80 groove weld test plates underwater at depth in their training facilities in Miami, Florida, Long Beach, California and Terneuzen, the Netherlands.

Port of Long Beach Honors Contractors

Ten building contractors were recognized Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, by the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners for hiring the most Long Beach residents for construction jobs at the Port of Long Beach’s Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project. The companies received the Port of Long Beach’s first “Community Partner Awards” for their work at the $1.3 billion terminal project. The Port started encouraging contractors to employ Long Beach residents at the project before construction started in April 2011.
