Wärtsilä introduced its new Wärtsilä 25 medium-speed four-stroke engine based on its modular technology platform and designed to accelerate and support the maritime sector’s efforts in achieving decarbonized operations.The engine is already capable of operating on diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), or on either gas or liquid carbon-neutral biofuels, and can easily be upgraded to operate with future carbon-free fuels as they become available. Maersk, Koole in Dutch Deal for 2020 Fuel

Maersk’s subsidiary Maersk Oil Trading has teamed up with Dutch liquid bulk storage operator Koole Terminals for the production of IMO 2020-compliant bunker fuel in the Port of Rotterdam.According to a Maersk statement, the production will take place at the Petrochemical Industrial Distillation (PID) unit, located at Koole’s Botlek site in the heart of the Port of Rotterdam. The toll distillation deal allows Maersk to produce VLSFO bunker fuel and will enable Maersk to further expand its bunker supply volumes in Europe.Annual production is expected to cover 5-10% of Maersk’s annual fuel demand.“The fuel manufacturing process allows Maersk to produce compatible low sulfur fuels that complies with the IMO 2020 sulfur cap implementation…

ONE, Hapag-Lloyd Partner for Feeder Services

Japan's Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Germany's Hapag-Lloyd have agreed to share space on their feeder services.As the first step, the cooperation will cover specific Intra-Europe (BAX, NBS, NPX, REX, SDX, ADX, LEX) and Intra-Asia (BHX, HAS, PID) feeder trade lanes. Koole Terminals Acquires Odfjell Terminals Rotterdam

Odfjell Terminals entered into an agreement with Koole Terminals B.V. of the Netherlands (Koole) to sell its 100% ownership of Odfjell Terminals Rotterdam (OTR).The sale will generate USD 100 million of cash proceeds to Odfjell. Odfjell announced that the transaction has closed.According to  Koole Terminals, Odfjell Terminals will be rebranded to Koole Tankstorage Botlek (KTB). Odfjell Reports Strongest Quarterly EBITDA Since 2008

Odfjell reported a net result for the first quarter 2016 of $24 millions, with improved EBITDA of $69 million, compared to $45 million last quarter. The company said it has seen a significant reduction in voyage expenses compared to previous quarters mainly due to expiry of bunker hedges. Odfjell Terminals, meanwhile, continues to improve with first profitable quarter since 2013. “We are pleased to see the increasing benefits from our cost cutting and efficiency program last year, which is now fundamentally changing the competitiveness of Odfjell,” said Kristian Mørch, CEO Odfjell SE. For chemical tankers, Odfjell  said the first quarter was a stronger quarter than the previous in terms of net earnings, with the majority of our vessel classes delivering improved performance.

Intermanager Supports Seafarers' Survey

InterManager, the international trade association for the shipmanagement and crewmanagement industry, is supporting a survey which aims to identify how much of a burden red tape places on seafarers. The Association is urging its members to encourage their staff to take part in the online survey, being organised by the Danish Maritime Authority. The worldwide study aims to identify seafarers' perception of administrative burdens and how these influence their daily working lives.

WHOI: Microbes Consumed Oil in Gulf Slick at Unexpected Rates

More than a year after the largest oil spill in history, perhaps the dominant lingering question about the Deepwater Horizon spill is, “What happened to the oil?” Now, in the first published study to explain the role of microbes in breaking down the oil slick on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) researchers have come up with answers that represent both surprisingly good news and a head-scratching mystery. In research scheduled to be published in the Aug. 2 online edition of Environmental Research Letters, the WHOI team studied samples from the surface oil slick and surrounding Gulf waters.

ZF Marine Mourns the Passing of Tom Katica

It is with sadness that the ZF Marine Group recognizes the passing of Thomas P. “Tom” Katica, our colleague and long time Account Manager for the Western Region. On July 8, 2010, after a two year battle with cancer, Tom finally succumbed peacefully in his home on Whidbey Island, surrounded by family. “This is a great loss, not only for ZF Marine, but the marine industry as a whole,” said Wolfgang Schmid, President and General Manager, ZF Marine LLC. “Tom’s passion for our business and this industry was clearly evident every single day. Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) is preparing to launch the new and innovative Midi Operator Station (MOS) on 1st January 2003. The MOS acts as an interface/operator station for process control indication and operation, and can be easily installed almost anywhere on a vessel. Acting as a fully integrated and self-contained operator station, the MOS allows for immediate access to the functions of the Datachief C20 Remote Operator Station (ROS) within the process areas of a ship such as the engine or switchboard room.
