Tampa Bay Ferry Pilot Program Underway
HMS Ferries, Inc. has begin a passenger only ferry pilot project in the Tampa Bay, Fla. area, called the “Cross Bay Ferry.” The six-month pilot project was launched on November 1, 2016 and will connect the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa, and end on May 1, 2017. The pilot project is a unique, regional effort designed to demonstrate water transportation technology and service options to the residents and businesses of the Tampa Bay region. The Cross-Bay Ferry is a collaboration between St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Hillsborough and Pinellas County, and operates between the Vinoy Basin in St.

US Fishermen Seek Federal Action against Illegal Fishing
Gulf of Mexico fishermen are threatened by a daily wave of foreign illegal fishing vessels and the U.S. fishing industry is calling on Congress to take action, Florida business owners said April 8 at an event hosted by the Gulf Coast Leadership Conference. Mexican fishing boats enter U.S. sovereign waters and illegally poach hundreds to thousands of fish at a time. Although the U.S. Coast Guard and Gulf state maritime law enforcement agencies have taken aggressive action to find and destroy these illegal Mexican vessels, the frequency of such incursions continues to escalate.
SRI-St. Petersburg Begins Operation of New Unit
Silicon Valley-based SRI International has officially started operations of a new marine technology unit in St. Petersburg, Fla. SRI’s expansion in Florida was first announced on November 30 at a press conference in St. Petersburg with Mayor Rick Baker. The new operation, called SRI-St. Petersburg, is being launched with the transition of up to 40 staff members from the University of South Florida’s Center for Ocean Technology. Six staff members have already joined SRI International and the new program, with several more expected soon. SRI-St. Petersburg plans to grow to 100 jobs over the next five years. Settlement to Clear Way for Restoration Projects in Tampa Bay
The state of Florida, the federal government and several corporations have agreed to a more than $8 million settlement to fund restoration projects for natural resources damaged in a 1993 oil spill in Tampa Bay. An 11-acre degraded mangrove system will be improved, two acres of salt marsh will be replanted, and millions of dollars for other natural resource restoration work will be paid by those responsible for the oil spill, the U.S. Commerce Department's NOAA, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Department of Justice said.
