New York Area Ports Shut Down after Dock Workers Walk Out

New York and New Jersey's cargo terminals shut down on Friday after more than a thousand longshoremen walked off the job, shuttering one of the country's busiest port networks. The employees stopped working around 11 a.m. (1600 GMT). It was not immediately clear what had prompted the walkout. "To run a picket you need a permit and there wasn't one issued by the Port Authority," said one Port Authority official who requested anonymity. Maritime security and law enforcement experts are gathering in Boston this week to better understand maritime domain awareness and the challenges of port, waterway and coastal security, environmental protection, safety and law enforcement. Drill Shows Port Vulnerability

In a strategic simulation of a terror attack designed to assess America's vulnerability through its ports, a group of business and government leaders found that such an attack could potentially cripple global trade and have a devastating impact on the nation's economy. The group focused on ways to improve detection before a weapon gets to a U.S. port, as well as help businesses to build resiliency into their operations. The two-day Port Security Wargame, sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton and The Conference Board, took place October 2-3, 2002, in Washington, DC, with 85 leaders from a range of government and industry organizations, who have a critical stake in port security.
