The maiden call by this ocean-going giant is a further milestone in the Port of Hamburg’s success story as one of the world’s most important and state-of-the-art container handling hubs. The triumphant advance of the container, which has revolutionized the worldwide transport industry, commenced in the Port of Hamburg on 31 May 1968. With the ‘American Lancer', a containership berthed at Burchardkai for the first time that day. It was the first step in a new era that was to shape change in the Port of Hamburg for ever. EU Targets Improved Port Efficiency

Draft rules designed to boost the efficiency and cut the cost of services supplied at EU maritime ports, such as mooring and towage, were voted by Parliament on Tuesday. Ensuring transparency in the setting of fees for using port services and infrastructure, and in any public funding that ports receive, should help to prevent price abuse and market distortions and thus boost trade, MEPs say. But current port service arrangements could remain, provided they meet minimum requirements, they add. "We have been able to dismiss the forced free market access to port services.

Chilean Port Workers Strike Disrupts Container Movements

Over 200 workers at Chile's San Antonio port remain on strike and workers at other ports have said they would not unload San Antonio port operator Puerto Central ships. Over 200 workers at Chile's San Antonio port remain on strike with workers at other ports saying they will not unload Puerto Central ships. Members of the Maritime Port Workers’ Federation of Costanera Espigón (Fetraportces) began their latest indefinite walkout on Saturday after failing to reach an agreement with port managers over shift patterns. A statement from Fetraportces president Diego Silva in the local media says that the San Antonio port  was not respecting agreements made previously, making distinctions between contracted and casual workers.

Australia: Casualty Resulted from Poor Planning and Maintenance

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) issued the report of its investigation into the foundering of the cargo ship Tycoon at Christmas Island on January 8, 2012.   Heavy weather arose while the ship was in position at the inner moorings at Flying Fish Cove. Under the stress of weather, one of the port’s permanent mooring lines came free from its anchor, allowing the ship to move forward, making contact with the terminal’s rock face.   The master did not immediately notify the port of the problem or make proper use of the ship’s engines or mooring lines to keep the ship safe. The ship eventually broke up and sank. The port managers had not undertaken a risk assessment and had not implemented an effective inspection and maintenance program. http://brymar-consulting.com

Shipping Event to Benefit From Singapore’s Economic Rebound

While still one of the world's most important maritime centers, Singapore has undoubtedly suffered of late. It endured the world's deepest recession last year, its worst economic year since gaining independence more than 30 years ago. Singapore is bouncing quickly back to growth. It appears that GDP growth in 2002 will be better than 3.4 per cent. Already, the second quarter has produced growth of 3.9 percent. agree that "happy days are here again". The recession did not really affect the maritime sector but it certainly dampened the mood in the Island Republic overall. the maritime industry forged ahead throughout. What it did do, though, for the Lion City's major maritime event for 2003 was dislodge an inconvenient competitor.

AAPA Presents Awards

Thirty-two ports received 60 Communications awards, two ports won awards for information technology projects, and five ports were recognized for outstanding Environmental programs during the September 25 awards luncheon at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, during the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 91st Annual Convention. In addition, five maritime professionals earned Professional Port Manager (PPM7) Certification from AAPA. AAPA’s Annual Communications Competition recognizes excellence in the products and services that ports produce to meet their public relations and marketing goals. The independent judges, communications professionals from the Washington, D.C. area, honored the best entries with 30 awards of excellence and 30 awards of merit.

Victor Roach Honored with AAPA Service Award

Longtime Barbados Port Authority official Victor Randolph Roach today was honored by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) with its Distinguished Service Award. Roach, who in December retired from his positions as deputy general manager and secretary of the board of directors of the Barbados Port Authority, was cited for his role in advancing hemispheric understanding of Caribbean ports and for his contributions to the cruise industry. He joined the authority as deputy general manager in 1994. Roach served as chairman of AAPA's Caribbean Delegation from 2000 to 2001 and has served on the AAPA Executive Committee and AAPA Board of Directors. Since its inception, Roach has been an active member of AAPA's Cruise Committee.

Hayman to Keynote AAPA Workshop

Christopher Hayman, managing director of U.K.-based Seatrade, is scheduled to provide the keynote address on January 15, at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Cruise Workshop in Barbados. Hayman is slated to discuss cruise fleet deployment trends at the opening session, at the Grand Barbados Hotel. the Western Hemisphere, because ports obviously play a most integral role in the cruise industry," said Hayman, who is based in Colchester, England. Hayman earned a history degree from Oxford University before joining the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1970. He returned to England in 1972 and became editor, and later publisher, of Seatrade magazine.
