The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) issued the report of its investigation into the foundering of the cargo ship Tycoon at Christmas Island on January 8, 2012.   Heavy weather arose while the ship was in position at the inner moorings at Flying Fish Cove. Under the stress of weather, one of the port’s permanent mooring lines came free from its anchor, allowing the ship to move forward, making contact with the terminal’s rock face.   The master did not immediately notify the port of the problem or make proper use of the ship’s engines or mooring lines to keep the ship safe. While still one of the world's most important maritime centers, Singapore has undoubtedly suffered of late. It endured the world's deepest recession last year, its worst economic year since gaining independence more than 30 years ago. Singapore is bouncing quickly back to growth. Longtime Barbados Port Authority official Victor Randolph Roach today was honored by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) with its Distinguished Service Award. Roach, who in December retired from his positions as deputy general manager and secretary of the board of directors of the Barbados Port Authority, was cited for his role in advancing hemispheric understanding of Caribbean ports and for his contributions to the cruise industry. He joined the authority as deputy general manager in 1994. Roach served as chairman of AAPA's Caribbean Delegation from 2000 to 2001 and has served on the AAPA Executive Committee and AAPA Board of Directors. Since its inception, Roach has been an active member of AAPA's Cruise Committee.

Christopher Hayman, managing director of U.K.-based Seatrade, is scheduled to provide the keynote address on January 15, at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Cruise Workshop in Barbados. Hayman is slated to discuss cruise fleet deployment trends at the opening session, at the Grand Barbados Hotel. the Western Hemisphere, because ports obviously play a most integral role in the cruise industry," said Hayman, who is based in Colchester, England. Hayman earned a history degree from Oxford University before joining the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1970.
