Marine Environment Protection for Southeast Asia Seas Project Launched

Seven ASEAN countries have formally launched an ambitious initiative aimed at improving the environmental health of the seas in the region, through the implementation of key International Maritime Organization (IMO) marine environment protection treaties. Senior decisions makers of maritime administrations of the beneficiary ASEAN countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) met for their first high-level regional meeting in Bali, Indonesia (25-27 June), to kick-start the “Marine Environment Protection for Southeast Asia Seas (MEPSEAS) Project”. IMO is implementing the project, with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

Damen Delivers Tug to Foyle Port

Damen Shipyards Group has delivered an ASD 2310 Tug to Foyle Port. The official handover of the new vessel – named Strathfoyle – took place at a short ceremony attended by the port’s staff, clients and stakeholders. Taking the position as most powerful tug at the port, the Strathfoyle marks a commitment to ongoing safe and efficient harbor assistance operations at Foyle Port. Foyle Port is in the North West of Ireland. Located at the south-west end of Lough Foyle, the port’s primary cargos are bulk goods arriving at the Lisahally Terminal and oil products that call at the LSS Oil Terminal.

Maritime Academy to Host K-12 Maritime Education Symposium

Renee Marazon, Superintendent, The Maritime Academy of Toledo, announced that the first-ever “K-12 Maritime Education Great Lakes and Inland Waterways Symposium” will be held Friday, April 26, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Maritime Academy at 803 Water St. in Toledo. The symposium is being held the day before, and in conjunction with, The Maritime Academy’s Third Annual Admiral’s Ball, the school’s annual major fund-raiser. The Admiral’s Ball will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Fifth-Third Center at One SeaGate in Downtown Toledo.

Damen Delivers Dredger to SCA

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem delivered the Cutter Suction Dredger “10th of Ramadan” to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). In 2002 the contract for delivery of the design, materials, components and building supervision was signed. Port Said Shipyards, a shipbuilding department of the Suez Canal Authority, was appointed to build the vessel. Engineering started immediately after contract signing. After finalizing the engineering, a committee of the Suez Canal Authority came to the Netherlands to inspect the drawings. After carrying out the required amendments in the drawings, the purchase of steel kits, equipment and systems followed. After inspection by Bureau Veritas (BV), the steel materials for the construction of the hull were supplied at the end of 2002.
