Metal Shark Debuts Prowler Autonomous Vessel and Frenzy Micro-USV

Louisiana-based boat builder Metal Shark has unveiled Prowler, its new autonomous, amphibious, and semi-submersible military craft engineered to meet the current and near future warfighting requirements of the U.S. military and its allies. JK Fabrication has landed DNV certification for its 40-30-3000-DNV series Anchor Winch. Culminating a two-year process, JK’s C-series winch was at last awarded DNV Type Approval in March—the first time ever for an anchor winch in the U.S., the manufacturer said. Conceived by JK’s founder, Jim Kreider, the anchor winch was installed aboard the F/V Arctic Prowler, a longliner recently built in Seattle. J.K. Fabrication Winch Earns DNV Approval

J.K. Fabrication announced it has received DNV Type Approval on its Model 40-30-3000 Anchor Winch. The winch can now be specified into existing commercial applications on barges, tugs, fishing and yacht vessels around the world. The company said the new Arctic Prowler Longlining vessel, built in Ketchikan by Alaska Ship and Drydock (now Vigor Industrial) for Alaska Longline Company of Petersburg received this anchor winch. jkfabrication.com

Arctic Prowler to be Christened Oct. 5

Alaska Longline, LLC, and Alaska Ship & Drydock (ASD) will christen the F/V Arctic Prowler on Oct. 5, 2013. The ceremony for the new 136 ft. freezer longliner will be held at the Ketchikan Shipyard in Ketchikan, Alaska. F/V Arctic Prowler, the first large commercial fishing vessel to be built in Alaska, is an Ocean going Factory Longliner, capable of processing and storing catch aboard. The vessel is to be Load Lined and classed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and will be U.S. flagged. The design shall comply with all applicable U.S. Coast Guard and Class Society stability requirements.

Alaska Ship & Drydock Already at Work on the First Vessel to be Completed in the Facility, a 136’ Longliner. The outlook for building new ships at Alaska Ship & Drydock (ASD), a Vigor Industrial company, just got a lot brighter, warmer, and drier with the opening of the Ketchikan Shipyard’s state-of-the-art assembly hall designed to build ships up to 500 feet in length. The assembly hall is 70,000 square feet with an adjacent 5-story production center to minimize material flow and maximize efficiency.

NAVSEA Salvage Engineers Recover Plane Materials

Naval Sea System Command's (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) conducted the recovery of the engines and other components of an EA-6B "Prowler" Aug. 17-20. The plane crashed near Feb. 12. The recovery utilized the Navy's remotely operated vehicle (ROV) "Deep Drone" operating from the Military Sealift Command's USNS Salvor (T-ARS 52). The EA-6B crashed into the in 6,500 feet of water while conducting night landing qualifications. The recovery operation was performed in order to assist the crash investigation in determining the cause of the accident and the possible implication it may have on the rest of the EA-6B inventory. Deep Drone is the Navy's workhorse ROV designed to meet the Navy's mid-water salvage requirements down to a maximum depth of 8,000 feet of seawater.

Port Everglades Salutes USS Ronald Reagan

CNO: Supplemental Budget Supports Navy GWOT Efforts

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen told lawmakers Feb. 13 that the Navy’s proposed $8.9 billion Emergency Wartime Supplemental request for fiscal year 2007 (FY07) will help the service reset and equip the force while staying ahead of the demands of current combat operations. “The Navy is doing its part in this long war, Mr. Chairman,” said Mullen in testimony to members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. “I am proud of that. USS John C. Stennis Deploys with Carrier Strike Group 3

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Sailors said goodbye to their family members and friends Jan. 16, as the ship departed Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton for San Diego to onload Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9. The carrier, with its embarked air wing, USS Antietam (CG 54), and USS Preble (DDG 88), will deploy from San Diego Saturday, Jan. 20. USS O'Kane (DDG 77) and USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) will deploy from their homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Stennis is the flagship for Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 3, headed by Rear Adm. Kevin M. Quinn. “I’m ready for deployment," said Machinist’s Mate Fireman Josh Layton. Stennis’ embarked air wing consists of the F/A-18C Hornet, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawkeye 2000, C-2A Greyhound and SH-60F/HH-60H Seahawk.

GW Completes Last Underway Before Yard Period

U.S. USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) returned to Naval Station Norfolk Sept. 1, following a two-and-a-half week underway period in preparation of the upcoming Planned Incremental Availability plus Docking (PIA+D). It was the last at sea period before GW goes to Norfolk Naval Shipyard. “This has been a tremendous underway, a complete success in every regard,” said Rear Adm. Garry R.
