VDL AEC Maritime Wins Order for SOx Scrubber Pair for Seatrade Groningen

VDL AEC Maritime received an order for the delivery of two retrofit scrubber systems to Seatrade Groningen BV. With this order VDL AEC Maritime extends its portfolio for the first time in their own home country, ánd to a Dutch ship-owner. Capital Ship Management, Liberty One Form JV

Capital Ship Management Corp. and Liberty One have announced the establishment of a joint venture under the name Capital Liberty Invest, taking aim at the German shipping market. The new entity will combine the forces, excellent track record and reputation of Capital and Liberty with the aim to provide commercial and technical ship operating platforms across different shipping segments and sizes in the German shipping market. The Joint Venture will seek growth opportunities in the container segment, ranging from feeder to Post-Panamax vessels, as well as in the crude and product tanker, dry bulk and multi-purpose vessels (MPP) segments. The Joint Venture commenced operations in January 2018 and is based out of the Liberty offices in Leer and headed by Liberty CEO, Dietrich Schulz.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management, Aurora LPG form JV

Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) announced a joint venture agreement with Aurora LPG Holding ASA (Aurora) for the technical management of Aurora's VLGC fleet. The joint venture will be named "Aurora Wilhelmsen Management Ltd" and will be incorporated in Hong Kong. Aurora Wilhelmsen Management (AWM) aims to provide quality ship management solutions to Aurora’s fleet with cost optimization. “We are excited to join hands with Aurora LPG. This is a win-win scenario and this partnership enhances our strengths in the LPG industry as well as confirming our position as a world class ship manager,” says Paal Gunnulfsen, Regional Vice President Asia, WSM. The partnership is a strong strategic bond leveraging the respective strengths and experiences of both companies.

BSM: Strong Player in Cyprus Shipping

BSM reports 20% increase in the number of vessels under its management over the last year. The increase seen by BSM comes as no surprise against the backdrop of a fast growing economy that Cyprus has been demonstrating in recent times. Particularly over the last six months, the country has attracted many private equity firms and shipping companies, such as Ridgebury Tankers, who have set up presence here in Cyprus. Mr McWhinnie, an active member of the board of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber and the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association, shares his insights on the contributions of BSM in shaping Cyprus’ ship management scene.

The Human Element of Ship Management

The best third party ship managers employ technology, good business practices, economies of scale and a customized approach for each client. None of that will succeed without first addressing the human element of the equation. Ship managers Crowley Maritime, Thome and Bibby Ship management companies all manage tonnage for others, in sometimes dissimilar sectors and different regions and world trades. Those differences set the three groups apart in terms of the skill sets necessary to manage different classes and types of ships. What brings them all together is a common belief that the human element of ship management is a critical piece of the equation. As it turns out, it may actually be the most important.

AMS Annual Membership Conference & Awards

The October 7th Annual Membership Conference for members of American Maritime Safety, Inc., was not officially billed as a 23rd anniversary event. Nevertheless, the story of AMS, an organization established by a group of U.S. based vessel owners and operators, is worthy of special mention. Indeed, this New York based Maritime Consortium has rapidly expanded in scope since its founding in 1988. From humble beginnings in New York, AMS has grown to over 400 vessel owners and operators and is now recognized as the leading industry association on regulatory compliance in the U.S.

Measuring Quality in Ship Management
