Port Closures for All of Pacific Northwest Entrances
The Coast Guard's two Captains of the Port have closed all maritime entrances in the Pacific Northwest, Friday, due to severe sea conditions and large amounts of debris in the water. In Oregon, the ports of Chetco River in Brookings; Coos Bay; Umpqua River in Winchester Bay; Siuslaw River in Florence; Yaquina Bay in Newport; Depoe Bay; Tillamook Bay in Girabaldi; and the Columbia River are closed to all traffic. In Washington the port of Grays Harbor in Westport; and Quillayute River in LaPush are closed. Several storms carrying strong winds and heavy rainfall crossed the Pacific Northwest over the last week and have caused flooding and landslides in parts of Oregon and Washington.

1802-Revenue Marine had a total of 38 commissioned officers in service: 9 captains, 10 first mates, 9 second mates and 10 third mates. 1983-The 605-foot collier Marine Electric capsized and sank off Virginia during a gale. Three of the 34 crewmen on board were rescued by Coast Guard and Navy assets. This sinking and consequent loss of life contributed to the establishment of a permanent rescue swimmer program for the Coast Guard. 1986- Rains began in northern California that lasted for a week, causing severe flooding. Coast Guard units participated in rescue and relief operations. 1997- Three of four crewmembers of MLB-44363 out of the Quillayute River Motor Lifeboat Station were lost in the line of duty when they responded to a distress call from the sailing vessel Gale Runner.
Coast Guard Terminates Voyage of Fishing Vessel
Coast Guard Station Quillayute River boarding officers terminated the voyage of the fishing vessel Yun Ye Sunday evening due to flooding. Boarding officers found flooding in the engine room in several locations and in the steering space of Archie Jorgenson, 64, of Bellingham, Wash., fishing vessel. The fishing vessel will not be allowed to leave the La Push marina until the repairs are completed and inspected by the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard Station to Hold Change of Command
Chief Warrant Officer Jerry J. Farmer will succeed Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Tumulty as Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Neah Bay, Wash., during an official ceremony. Farmer will assume the responsibility of commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Neah Bay which overseas search and rescue and law enforcement in one of the most remote regions of Washington State. The Station maintains a 47-ft. motor lifeboat, 41-ft. utility boat and a 25-ft. response boat. Farmer spent five years at Quillayute River where he qualified as a heavy weather coxswain on the 44-foot motor lifeboat. After being advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class, he reported to the National Motor Lifeboat School in Ilwaco, Wash. In August 1995 he was assigned to the maintenance division at the school.
