Hurtigruten Cuts Short Antarctic Voyage After COVID Outbreak

US CDC Says to Avoid Cruise Travel as Omicron Cases Surge

Carnival Says Most Itineraries Unchanged as Omicron Cases Rise

Costamare Orders Eight New Containerships, Buys Seven Secondhand Bulkers

Shipowner Costamare Inc. announced it has ordered eight newbuild containerships and acquired seven secondhand bulk carriers.The Monaco-headquartered company said Thursday it signed contracts with an unspecified Asian shipyard for two 13,000 TEU capacity newbuilds and exercised options under a previous agreement for two more of the same capacity plus four additional 15,000 TEU capacity vessels. Royal Caribbean Asks Unvaccinated Passengers to Get Travel Insurance

Arne Wilhelmsen, a founder of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. died Saturday, April 11, 2020, in Palma, Spain. Adam Goldstein Leaves Royal Caribbean

Longtime cruise industry executive Adam Goldstein has left Royal Caribbean Cruises after more than 30 years with the company.Goldstein was most recenlty Vice Chairman of RCL from 2018. From 2014 to 2018, he served as President & COO and from 2007 to 2014, he was President & CEO of the Royal Caribbean International brand. Goldstein has been with RCL since 1988.Goldstein will continue to serve as Chair of the trade group Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Galveston Port, RCL to Develop Cruise Terminal

Miami-based cruise company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) will kick off construction of a third cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston in Texas next year.Both companies have approved a lease agreement to build a third cruise terminal at Pier 10 in Galveston with $100 million in construction cost.Through the public-private partnership, RCL will build the terminal, then lease it from the port for an initial term of 20 years, with four 10-year extension options.The two-story terminal will have a footprint of approximately 170,000 square feet on 10 acres in the eastern section of the Pier 10. Construction is expected to begin in April 2020.Anticipated to open in fall 2021

First Fire Prevention Notation in Cruiser

Cruise operator Royal Caribbean International (RCL),  Finnish technology major Wärtsilä, and DNV GL announced that Navigator of the Seas, the Voyager-class cruise, will feature the industry's first fire prevention notation.Even though great strides have been taken in detecting, containing and extinguishing fires, the best time to fight a fire is before it starts.The desire to work towards a zero-fire engine room led cruise operator RCL, technology group Wärtsilä, and classification society DNV GL to initiate a joint industry project to improve engine room fire prevention.Since 2016, the partners have worked with stakeholders across the whole industry to collect data, analyse the key risks, and develop safety barriers to manage the most significant risk factors.

RCL Confirms Sixth Vessel Order

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) just gave confirmation of an order for Chantiers de l’Atlantique, according to a previous option agreement, to build a new Oasis-class cruise ship, due for delivery in the fall of 2023.“At her delivery, she will be the twenty third cruise ship built by our yard for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, and we are especially proud of it”, said Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique."With her outstanding dimensions, the new 2857-cabin ship (hull A35) will belong, like her sister ships of the Oasis-Class, to the category of the largest cruise ships ever built," said a press release.As per some contracts previously signed with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd for Oasis-Class ships

RCL Orders Oasis Class Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.  entered into an agreement with French shipbuilder Chantiers de l'Atlantique to order a sixth Oasis-class ship for delivery in the fall of 2023."This is the twenty-third cruise ship that RCL will be building at our shipyard, and we are especially proud of it," said Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l'Atlantique.This order is contingent upon financing, which is expected to be completed in the second or third quarter of this year.

Silversea Cruises Orders Three New Ships

Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) and Silversea Cruises announced agreements to build three new ships for Silversea Cruises, including two luxury vessels as well as a single expedition ship for the Galapagos.Silversea, the luxury and expedition cruise brand that recently joined the RCL family, signed a memorandum of understanding with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft to build two new vessels in its new Evolution Class. The first Evolution Class ship is expected to deliver in 2022.Silversea also signed a contract with Dutch shipbuilder Shipyard De Hoop to construct a new expedition vessel, named Silver Origin, that will serve the Galapagos Islands itinerary currently sailed by Silver Galapagos.

Newport Shipping Buys 100 Scrubbers

Ctrip, Royal Caribbean Cruises to End SkySea Joint Venture

Royal Caribbean Cruises and Ctrip announced today that they are ending the SkySea Cruise Line joint venture. TUI AG's Marella Cruises has agreed to purchase Golden Era, with delivery expected in December, 2018. As a result of this transaction, TUI Cruises will now retain Mein Schiff 2 in its fleet, rather than selling it to Marella Cruises, giving TUI Cruises increased capacity in the strong German market. After the sale of Golden Era, it is expected that SkySea will wind down its business operations before the end of 2018. The companies expect that favorable business conditions in China and elsewhere will allow them to absorb most SkySea employees into available positions at RCL and Ctrip.

RCL's Mariner of the Seas Upgrades with Valmet

Valmet will upgrade the Damatic XDi automation system to a Valmet DNA system onboard the Mariner of the Seas cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean International. With this upgrade, the operators of the machinery and air conditioning systems will have a modern and efficient Valmet DNA user interface, including a state-of-the-art history storage and data analyzing and reporting tools. The order was included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2017 orders received. Valmet's delivery will take place in April 2018 and will be completed in late June 2018.
