As the maritime industry steams toward decarbonization, the path to zero emissions will include many stepping stones. Wärtsilä’s Compact Reliq is a step change in efficiently reliquefying boil off gas (BOG) on LNG carriers, as Lasse Wichstrøm and Sylvain Fabreguettes discuss with Maritime Reporter TV.LNG carriers have, for years, utilized boil off gas (BOG) to help fuel the ship, even before ‘decarbonization’ and ‘emission reduction’ became lexicon in the maritime sector.“Compact Reliq is not a brand-new product in the sense that reliquefaction plants have been around for some time…

One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping

Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.

Maersk Helps in UN Food Saving Initiative

Maersk Container Industry has joined the United Nations' SAVE FOOD Initiative to help make international food logistics more efficient. "Food should not be wasted, but too often it is, and we believe our technologies can help improve the food logistics chain," says Peter K. Nymand, CEO of Maersk Container Industry, MCI. The UN food organization FAO, under which SAVE FOOD is organised, estimates that globally up to 50 % of fruits and vegetables are lost between farm and fork. Transport and distribution may account for between 5% and 20% of the loss depending on the specific region of the world. Technologies like Star Cool CA and AV+ are used to control a refrigeration container's temperature, humidity, air flow and air composition.
