'All-Hands' Ceremony Held at Coast Guard Yard

During an "All-Hands" celebration held at the Coast Guard Yard on Oct. 2, four members of the Maryland Congressional Delegation and the Coast Guard's Assistant Commandant for Systems presented three prestigious awards to the shipyard's work force. Employees of the yard, its tenants commands and invited guests numbered nearly 900 and enjoyed the mid-morning festivities on the parade grounds of the 101 year old shipyard in Baltimore, Md. The honors recognized outstanding achievements by Yard employees in the areas of government reinvention, environmental management, and maritime excellence. The ceremony opened with U.S. Senators Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Milkulski's presentation of the Vice President's Hammer Award to the Coast Guard Yard.

Deepwater Acquisition Project Designated as Government Reinvention Laboratory

The USCG's comprehensive approach to designing and obtaining its next fleet of ships, aircraft and communications systems was recognized in a letter from Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater to Vice-President Al Gore. The Deepwater Capability Replacement Project was formally designated a Reinvention Laboratory under the National Partnership for Reinventing Government in the Secretary's letter. Deepwater was recognized for planning an entire asset acquisition - ships, aircraft, communications and technology - as one coordinated system, rather than a series of distinct procurements. Dredging Contractor Shares Government Honors

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company has been notified its project team for the Boston Harbor Navigation Improvement Project has been named to receive a Hammer Award from Vice-President Al Gore. The Hammer Awards are presented by Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government to recognize achievements in partnerships between governmental agencies and the private sector. The team honored is comprised of Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, Massachusetts Port Authority, the USACE, the Massachusettes Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. The team is being honored for its approach to dredging two major shipping channels - Boston Harbor and the Cape Cod Canal - which resulted in a direct savings of $1.5 million to taxpayers…
