Windstar Cuts Steel for Second Star-class Ship from Fincantieri

esterday at Fincantieri’s shipyard, in Palermo, Italy, Christopher Prelog, Vice President of Fleet Operations for Seattle-based Windstar Cruises, activated the torch to make the first cut in the new steel that will become the newly constructed mid-section of the company’s new ship MS Star Legend. This is the second of three new mid-ship sections being designed and constructed as part of Windstar’s $250 million Star Plus Initiative which aimsto expand and transform the line’s three Star-class vessels.“This is a momentous day for Windstar as we reach another major milestone,” said Prelog.

Floating hotel draws workers to NW Canada boom town

Hundreds of construction workers in booming northern British Columbia will take up residence this week in unique digs on board a cruise ferry revamped into a floating luxury hotel. The aging ship will help relieve a housing shortage in one busy Canadian port town already bursting ahead of a promised energy boom that could last more than a decade. The Silja Festival - a Baltic ferry made over as the Delta Spirit Lodge - will spend at least a year docked outside Kitimat, British Columbia, where it will provide housing for about 600 workers in town for Rio Tinto Alcan's $3.3 billion smelter-upgrade project, which is expected to wrap up in 2015.

Miami Mega-Yacht Marina Selects SeaSecure

Flagstone Property Group was awarded the rights to develop a mega-yacht marina on Miami’s Watson Island by the City of Miami. Mehmet Bayraktar, Chairman and CEO of Flagstone, has said that the project will be completed by the end of 2006. In addition to the super yacht marina, Island Gardens will also include two high-rise hotel towers including fractional residences, a maritime gallery, restaurants, retail shops, and cultural facilities. Once completed, the Island Gardens project will employ more than 1,500 employees. Carnival to Build and Operate Cruise Terminal in Honduras

Carnival Corporation & plc has signed an agreement to build and operate a cruise terminal on the island of Roatan, Honduras. Development of the facility - to be called "Mahogany Bay - Roatan" – is expected to start in fall 2007 and be completed by summer 2009 at a cost of $50m. The cruise facility will be situated on 20 acres on the Roatan waterfront and will consist of a two-berth cruise terminal capable of accommodating super post-Panamax vessels and up to 7,000 passengers daily. Partnering with Carnival on the project is Jerry Hynds, a local business leader and a member of the Honduran Congress. He is also the owner of Coral Cay, a resort property located adjacent to the planned port facility. host 225 cruise ship calls and 500,000 passengers annually.
